“Not 100 in the United States hate the Roman Catholic Church, but millions hate what they mistakenly think the Roman Catholic Church is”

does anyone know where this came from?

I googled it and got it a few times, but never found the context in which he said it. sorry.

“Not 100 in the United States hate the Roman Catholic Church, but millions hate what they mistakenly think the Roman Catholic Church is”

I don’t know where that version comes from. There is another version close to it:

“The enemies of the Church often do not hate the Church: they only hate what they erroneously believe to be the Church.”

from Love One Another, 1944, page 142

I don’t know what writing it is from or from what speech it is from, but what our beloved Bishop is saying that there are less than 100 people in the US who truly know the nature of The Church, its teachings, its mission, and its beliefs…yet still despise it. However, there are millions who have misconceptions about the Church that they learned from various sources…and they hate the misconceptions, but since what they hate is not true about The Catholic Church…then by deductive reasoning, they don’t actually hate The Catholic Church…they hate the lies they have been told about The Catholic Church.

Vincent << It’s in the preface to Radio Replies. >>

That’s it, full quote here

“There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church…As a matter of fact, if we Catholics believed all of the untruths and lies which were said against the Church, we probably would hate the Church a thousand times more than they do.” ARCHBISHOP FULTON J. SHEEN – preface to RADIO REPLIES

A Response to Catholic Inventions

In the ellipses … he gives some common anti-Catholic examples. It’s accurate, I typed it in myself from Radio Replies.

thanks Phil!

btw, you’re like my freakin role-model. i’ve read everything at your website and i admire your ability to defend the faith.

I was privileged to attend a group of talks he gave in Dodge City, KS.

He said it there and I remember him saying it on his tv show as well.

This is the way I found it but I don’t recall where I found it.

“Few people in America hate the Catholic religion, but there are many who hate what they mistakenly believe is the Catholic religion—and if what they hate really were the Catholic religion, Catholics would hate it too.”
Bishop Fulton Sheen
