What is the truth about Masons?

Is there a difference between Masons and Freemasons? I’ve recently found out that my son-in-law’s father and grandfather were both involved in the “Masons” to a high degree. He laughed when asked about it and says it’s just a philanthropic group. How can I warn my daughter without alienating her? She is now going to a Baptist church and her husband’s philosophy is to let the children decide on their own religion in their teens. This frightens me. They were married in the Catholic Church and promised to raise the children Catholic. It’s not happening. Could respond to this privately please?
