My mom sent all my baby stuff to me recently and my wife and I were going through the boxes. We came across what I’m guessing is a type of scapular and was hoping that someone can help me in identifying it. Thank you for your help!

Also, if this is in the wrong sub, please fix for me. It’s been awhile since I’ve been active in here due to life being busy.

It looks like the green scapular or at any rate the scapular of the sacred heart of Mary. The Catholic answers website has an article on scapulars and the various types.

How do I know about the article? Because I found one in a second hand shop in an Irish wool jacket inner pocket which is a scapular dedicated to the league of the sacred heart of Jesus, three days ago! Happy Christmas.

The above link is quite helpful. For a baby, who presumably is not in need of conversion, it would be a gesture of asking Mary to protect the baby against illness or evil.

You don’t use it as an alternative to baptizing the baby. That would be a misuse of it. The Green Scapular doesn’t take the place of sacraments.

You use it in addition to baptism, the same way you might use a Miraculous Medal.

I’ve known people who give green scapulars to children they can’t Baptize. (AKA someone else’s children.) Usually it’s a grandchild or stepchild. I also remembering a story about little old ladies who were stopped by police from throwing rocks with green scapulars attached onto the roof of a Planned Parenthood. I find this sort of thing to be somewhat of a superstitious use of the green scapular, but I think their heart’s in the right place.

In that case it would be in hopes of conversion of the child and also probably his parents.

I don’t think publicly throwing them on a roof is a good idea. Surreptitiously hiding one perhaps okay, but for a PP clinic, one would have to evade security cameras.

Fr. Heilman had a few hundred people hiding them last October on the Capitol grounds and National Mall. I might stop back next year and see if the one I hid is still there. I agree with you it seemed slightly superstitious, but Washington was largely built by Freemasons, who are not exactly un-superstitious, so I understand Father wanting to emphasize the supernatural aspect of religion and fight fire with fire. The Capitol security guards were pretty nice about all this business. I guess Catholics don’t look very scary.

Yeah, if I remember the story correctly, the ladies were doing this late at night and were caught on the security camera. They initially thought that they were attempting to vandalize or even bomb the clinic, but it turns out it was just scapulars.

I had put a green scapular under the mattress on my husband’s side of the bed and prayed a lot for him over the years. One day we were turning the mattress and he got a bit upset when he saw a religious item,…but eventually he did return to the Church! 😀

The scapular is a symbol of piety and respect to Mary and to be worn as such.

Is there some reason you’re replying to my post with your comment?

I don’t think I have suggested any use of the scapular that is impious or disrespectful to Mary in this thread.

I meant to respond to ajg- hit the button in error, sorry to the person that loved your response for some reason…
