what is this symbol?

I saw a symbol in 2 Orthodox churches and 1 Catholic church… it was like a triangle with rays coming from it. It looked like a lot like the masonic symbol on the US bill… (the top part of it)

But what is it really?? is there some other explanation of it (in the churches)?

the Catholic Church I’m talking about is a Cathedral and it was built during the time when the Church was really against freemasonry… (of course, it still is. But back then it was a big deal and was talked about a lot). The symbol is on the Tabernacle of one of the side altars.

do you have a reliable source that proves that any of the images used on US currency are masonic in origin?

I did a “masonic sign on us currency” google search and got 44,000 hits. I hope there’s a “reliable” one in there.

We had that on the ceiling of our church but there was an eye in the center and we were always taught that it was the eye of God, all-seeing, all the time.

Phemie, we have that symbol in our church also. It’s a triangle with an eye in it, and I think it has rays going out from the triangle. It’s part of the stained glass window above the front door of the church. I was told it represents the all-seeing eye of God.
 
It may be the all seeing eye of God, surrounded on three side to represent God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

I was in Turkey, the most secular of Muslim countries, and they sold glass “eyes” as a good luck charm representing the eye of Allah.

If it is just a triangle with rays, but no eye, then I strongly suspect it is a symbol of the Blessed Trinity.
 
Maybe the symbol originally represented the Trinity and then the masons starting using it? because I did find this from the “Masonic Lodge of Education” (I’m guessing one of their websites) masonic-lodge-of-education.com/freemason-symbols.html

I don’t think it proves that the Church is in any way associated with freemasonry though, especially since it condemns it. It’s just strange how the symbol is used in both ways. It seems that originally it was a Christian symbol.
 
My church is pretty old, built in 1866, I believe. I doubt any church built today would have that symbol on it, because it’s meaning would be misconstrued.

The triangle “with rays coming from it” in Catholicism represents God. One in three persons, the Blessed Trinity. Father, Son and Holy Ghost(Spirit).

The Mason’s symbol is that of a pyramid:

When I was in first grade( 1941-42) that triangle with the eye and rays represented the trinity and Gods all seeing eye. It was printed in one of our religion books.:)👍
 
God and the Trinity! Everyone is right! At least that’s what I thought. I also think that the OP is right–the Freemasons started using it, but for their evil masonic purposes.
