Hello everyone. Today, my Catholic calendar says Total Abstinence for today. What does that mean? Can I still eat fish?

No meat… Yes you can eat fish.

Abstinence (in this context) always means from meat.🙂

LOL - had to read the opening thread twice since my father was a Pioneer (took the oath for life) to make sure what was the topic!

Yep. Eat fish. You may be thinking of fast, which is different than abstinence. Now I have heard, but don’t quote me, that if the food has some meat ingrediant in it like a beef broth, that’s ok.

Yes, I believe they said that in the Ask an Apologist forum. Sorry, I just had to quote you. 😛

I seem to recall that under the 1917 canon law on fast and abstinence that on the days one could eat meat that the two smaller meals could not contain meat, thus a day of partial abstinence. Then came Fridays and Ash Wednesday and abstinence is total, no meat at any meal.

That is interesting but we are now obligated by the newer canon law. 😉 🙂

are you sure you are ready for the answer to this question?

yes there used to be a difference between partial and total abstinence from meat, but I was pretty young so I don’t recall the rules.
