“What is truth?” Pilate asked (John 18:38).

Good question! Anyone have an opinion as to a good answer?

🤷

Unfortunately I don’t have the Latin phrases at hand. I once saw that in Latin “What is Truth” can be anagrammed to “The one before you.”

I regret that my memory is too fuzzy to give more detail.

Thank you, Joe. Are you saying, then, that Jesus Christ is the truth?

Yes! Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life.

He doesn’t just speak truth, He IS truth!

Quid est veritas?

Est vir, qui adest.
I know no Latin, but if i had to guess, i’d say *Quid est veritas? *translates to “What is truth?”

Tell me, please, what is the meaning of Est vir, qui adest?

🤷

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

(John 14:6)

Yes, i suppose that the truth was right before Pilot’s eyes!

😃

However, i’m not so sure of what Jesus meant in the 14th chapter of St. John’s gospel. What do you think he meant, Didi?

🤷

Exactly.

Sorry about that. It means: “It is the man who stands here”.
est = is
vir = man
qui = who
adest = stands here.
The words “it”, “the” and “who” are implied.
A cute anagram, for sure.

That He (Jesus) is the only way to the Father (eternal salvation = life). He has the ultimate Truth because He is Truth. There is no deception in God, there can be no deception in God because He is Truth.

Yes, i see. Thank you, Ateista!

Yes, i understand, Didi. Thank you!

In response, i’d like to say that i honestly think that Jesus did not mean that He is the true answer to every question, because there are many questions to which He is not the answer. For example, let us say a child turned in a mathematical quiz to her kindergarten teacher. Lets say that one of the questions was:

What is 1 + 1?

I think you would agree that the teacher would be right to mark the answer wrong if the pupil wrote:

1 + 1 = Jesus
😃

You see, my question is not who is true, but what truth is. I’d like to know what the true nature of truth is. I’d like to know the answer to Pilot’s question:

What is truth?

I am reminded of the Sunday School teacher who asked the class, “What is grey and furry and eats nuts?” One of the students replied, " I know that the answer is supposed to be Jesus, but it sounds awfully like a squirrel to me." 😃

Thank you for reminding me of this fabulous joke. I heard it a long time ago, but somehow forgot it. 🙂

Truth is that which corresponds to reality.

God is the first cause of everything. All of reality is subjective to God but objective to us.

Jesus is God incarnate. He caused all of reality, therefore the Truth lies in him.

That’s the way I would answer that question anyway :twocents:

God and Truth are synonymous.

Therefore, Jesus is the Divine Incarnation of Truth.

there are 17 replies to this post and not one philosophically addresses the important question of —“WHAT IS TRUTH”

Let’s get to it boys!

LOL!

Yes, in a way i’m just joking, but perhaps the fun will result in something more profound.
