Do you have a favorite OT book? If so, which one and why? (i.e. Messianic phrophecy, historical significance, etc., etc.)

God Bless…

Ecclesiastes.

As a corporate executive type, I personally struggle with materialism in my life, and Ecclesiastes is a great book to keep you grounded.

Psalms-
Praying the LotH has brought me a whole new appreciation for this treasure.

Song of Songs is my favorite. It speaks of the relationship between the soul and the Lord with many references that speak of a daughter who was created perfect, whose life was given to her Lord alone, which the Church has said refers to Mary. And since I have a deep devotion to Our Lady and am a Lay Carmelite, I find Song of Songs reflects my own spiritual life and devotion.

I have to preface this statement by saying that I have only gotten up to 1 Chronicles. So…up to that point my favorite OT book would have to be Genesis.

Psalms…I find great consolation in them…especially the 23rd
and 91.

I like the book of Wisdom. Wisdom 7:24 seems to prohesy about Jesus in the most beautiful way, over even New Testament verses.

**NAB WIS 9:4 **
**
**Give me Wisdom, the attendant at your throne, and reject me not from among your children;

**NAB COL 2:2 **

I wish their hearts to be strengthened and themselves to be closely united in love, enriched with full assurance by their knowledge of the mystery of God–namely Christ–in whom every treasure of wisdom and knowledge is hidden.

**NAB WIS 10:9 **

But **Wisdom delivered from tribulations those who served her. She, **when the just man fled from his brother’s anger, guided him in direct ways, Showed him the kingdom of God and gave him knowledge of holy things; **NAB WIS 10:13 **

**She did not abandon the just man when he was sold but delivered him from sin. **(WIS 6:17–JOH 14:21) (WIS 9:6) (ISA 11:2) (PRO 8:35) **NAB PRO 8:22 Wisdom **

**“The LORD begot me, the firstborn of his ways, the forerunner of his prodigies of long ago; From of old I was poured forth, at the first, before the earth.” **

NAB WIS 8:17

That there is immortality in kinship with Wisdom.
**NAB WIS 10:20 **

Therefore the just despoiled the wicked; and they sang, O LORD, your holy name and praised in unison your conquering hand– Because Wisdom opened the mouths of the dumb, and gave ready speech to infants.

NAB MAT 21:15 **
“Hosanna to the Son of David!”** Do you hear what they are saying?" they asked him. Jesus said to them, “Of course I do! Did you never read this: 'From the speech of infants and children you have framed a hymn of praise’?” NAB MAT 9:32
As they were leaving, suddenly some people brought him a mute who was possessed by a demon. Once the demon was expelled the mute began to speak, to the great surprise of the crowds. “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!” they exclaimed.
**NAB WIS 7:24 **

For Wisdom is mobile beyond all things by reason of her purity. For she is an aura of the might of God and a pure effusion of the glory of the Almighty; therefore nought that is sullied enters into her. For she is the refulgence of eternal light, the spotless mirror of the power of God, the image of his goodness. And she, who is one, can do all things, and renews everything while herself perduring; And passing into holy souls from age to age, she produces friends of God and prophets. For there is nought God loves, be it not one who dwells with Wisdom. For she is fairer than the sun and surpasses every constellation of the stars. Compared to light, she takes precedence; for that, indeed, night supplants, but wickedness prevails not over Wisdom.

The Book of Tobit. I like how the story shows that God comes to the aid of his servants, while working in mysterious ways. I also like Angels.

Does anyone know why that book was taken out of the Protestant bibles?

It involves the intercession of a Saint. Luther’s primary reason is because the Palestinian Jews rejected it. All the other Protestants followed his lead. All the books removed by Luther speak of: faith with good works, prayers for the dead, the interecession of Saints, and prophecies related to the Virgin Mary.

Psalm45:9:

Tobit also contains the teachings of Jesus on marriage, look when Tobit’s son is to marry, they call it everlasting, very different from Deuteronomy. The two become one. Also the healing of the woman with the demon, seven husbands died, compare to Mary Mag with the seven demons. Healing of the blind and on and on… lol

While your general thesis is right Luther objected to 2 Maccabees primarily to references of it being holy and pious practice to pray for the dead. In reality Luther was all over the place he didn’t think Esther was canonical and thought it was worthless. He really didn’t use one standard of deeming a book canonical or not but it came down to his own subjecitve preference in fact he loved 1 Maccabees and thought it to be canonical in content but wouldn’t deem it such becuase of course that would make 2 Maccabess canonical so refrained from crossing the line but he thought many of the dueteros were very good reading and profitable. He sure gave them better reviews than he gave Esther which he threw out of his canon and gave disparaging remarks to a book deemed canonical by all Jews and Christians.

Luther on Tobit "a truly beautiful , wholesome, and profitable fiction, the work of a gifted poet…A book useful and good for us Christians to read’ (Preface to the Boook of Tobit,'Luther’s translation of the Bible ed 1534).

I also love Tobit but Job is my all time favorite I think of Job everytime what ever could go wrong has gone wrong and simply try to reply naked I came and naked I will return Blessed be the Name of the Lord!

That reminds me of something funny.
In an effort to gain Christian votes a weakspot for Howard Dean during the democratic presidential primaries Dean claimed when asked what was his favorite Book of the Bible. He said Job was his favorite book in the New Testament.
Break open your dusty Bible Howard its in the Old Testament.
WOnder what his Jewish supporters were thinking.

I like Psalms for the complete range of Christian emotion and worship that the book expresses. A close runner up is Wisdom. I just really enjoy the imagery and the deep thoughts.

Genesis,… hands down.
Why? I love the creation story, and the way Our Blessed Mother and Our Lord our foreshadowed, and all of the New Testement foreshadowing of our redemption including all the Christological prefigurments.

If I had to select only one book, it would be Genesis because of its sweeping account of mankind’s creation and earliest relationships with God. I especially like the story of Joseph, an Old Testament type of Jesus. The other Old Testament books that I particularly like are Exodus, Daniel, Isaiah, and Judges.

I would have to say that Job is my favorite. My least favorite is Leviticus. I get a headache reading it.
