I hope this topic is allowed to be posted on CAF and isn’t a not allowed topic?

Father Zlatko Sudac strikes me as being very profound in his teachings, and his teachings seem orthodox to the Catholic Church.
At the same time though, something strikes me as wrong/gives me an off vibe.
His appearance is a bit New-age and he sometimes doesn’t shun luxury clothing (as would be expected from a priest).

How do I know if I’m being gullible or not?

We don’t judge priests based on their “vibe”. If the man is a priest in good standing with his bishop, his diocese and the Vatican, then he’s a priest, period, and there’s no need for me to worry about it any further than that unless I personally witness something wrong that he does.

This priest seems to spend most of his time in Croatia except when he goes on speaking tours, so it’s not like he’s at my parish and to be honest not being Croatian I don’t have all that much concern about him one way or the other. If he happened to be speaking in my area and it was a tour okayed by the bishop and other Church authorities, perhaps I would go, but I won’t be catching a flight over to Croatia to gawk at him.

Likewise if what he is preaching conforms to Church teaching, and I haven’t seen any indication that it doesn’t, then it’s not a concern of mine.

To the extent your concern about “gullible” has to do with his alleged stigmata, bilocation etc, the Church is not requiring you to believe in that. If it’s legit then I’m sure someone will start a sainthood cause after the man dies and maybe someday he will be a saint, but given that he is still pretty young, that would all seem to be a long way off.

Thanks Tis_Bearself,

I should have mentioned I’m Croatian background.
There has been some controversy surrounding him in Croatia in the sense that a Cardinal referred to him as “cult like” but that was some years ago.

While I understand that the Catholic Church does not require anyone to believe in someone’s stigmata etc,at the same time I think it’s good on a personal level to have some “skill” to know if you are being gullible or not (not necessarily strictly for religious matters),

If the man wasn’t a priest, I’d be more concerned. Since he’s a priest, he has oversight from his superiors and is bound to obedience.

If his superiors think he is wrong or going too far, they will limit his activities, presumably, and he will need to obey them. If he doesn’t obey then that’s likely wrong (unless they order him to do something against the teaching of the Church, of course).

On the other hand, if he’s still out there functioning as a holy priest, saying Mass etc and in good standing with his own bishop, that would be all I’m concerned about.

Cardinals in the past have been annoyed that some priest gets attention for one thing or another. Archbishop Sheen in the USA was criticized and opposed by a powerful Cardinal when he was alive. Also, Father Sudac might not be able to control the crazy way people act towards him, so maybe it’s not even his fault.

I think if it’s someone like a lay person with no authority over them and worse yet if they are collecting money, that’s when we have to be very careful because they could be just making money for themselves with no one like a bishop to tell them what to do.
