peter please dont think so little of yourself,

or compare yourself to others.

have you spoken to your Parish Priest about your vocation?

First off, stop putting yourself down so much. It’s not constructive. There’s no need to compare yourself to others. I know it can be hard not to, especially in a setting like High school where people are constantly rated based on their perceived “intelligence.” In reality, it is the people who work hard who succeed, not necessarily the most intelligent person.

Secondly, I want you to read up on Fr. Solanus Casey. He was a man who was not considered to be the most intelligent, and yet through his humility and love of Christ performed many miraculous healings.

Intelligence is not the best indicator of aptitude, as many of the most intelligent people are arrogant and self-assured. It is often the regular people, rather than the intelligentsia, who are the greatest servants of our Lord.

There is always room for an Aquinas, but the vast majority of the saints are simple people who loved God with their whole heart.

Read about the life of St John Vianney, patron saint of priests.

Talk to the vocations director for the order you want to join.

Everyone is different, and the vocation to diocesan priesthood is different from the vocation to religious order priesthood. You have different gifts, and they all work for the good of the body. It’s not a competition.

Please don’t put yourself down. Grades and intelligence aren’t everything. Speaking to your Priest could be very helpful and they may be able to give you advice on your vocation.

St. Damien of Moloka’i was reportedly terrible at school and almost didn’t get through seminary because his Latin was so awful (this was back in the day when they were required to learn Latin to say Mass).

And now he’s one of the most beloved saints worldwide, esp. in the Pacific Islands.

I also go to school with a bunch of seminarians, and they’re not all geniuses. Don’t freak out too much about it; just pray and ask for spiritual direction. College is hard for everyone, and if you do go to the seminary, you’re bound to find other guys in the same classes as you who’ll help you out if you need it.

i have a girlfriend tho. not like im just going to leave her
but this feeling keep coming toward me until i had enough of it and decided to follow that feeling… i pray to God… and suddenly i felt so eager to join seminary…

now this problem came to me…

Well Peter, you have to be honest with yourself , and the first part is to ask why are you feeling so negative toward yourself… It could be a sign of personal depression which only you can determine and should consider if it is a real problem that you may or not may have. Then you have to remember not to compare yourself to others it isn’t worth doing and only leads to more problems.

Your grades are the real issue, Bishops do not have the time to personally get to know each and every candidate, they have a board of members, some clergy a handful are lay people, and you go through a grueling interview in which you are asked some very normal to very awkward questions, and then you end up taking a psychological exam which more than likely you will not be given the results too; on top of that your grades and educational level are examined. So yes your grades do matter, not all of them, but the more well rounded your grades are, the better not only for yourself, but for you application into a seminary College which has 4-8 more years of educational classes. Then you are also judged on your work history as well, when was the last time you worked ? How long have you held a job, is primarly what is looked at , the only time the actual job matters, is if you were a manager in charge of people, or incharge of finances, as those are skills of leadership.

If you take out the religious side of becoming a priest, the process is judged more often on these issues, and even if you make the initial cut, you could be asked leave the seminary at any time for any number of reasons, poor grades, poor behaviour, not showing up to places where you are supposed to be, or perhaps someone just doesnt feel you are really cut out to be a priest. OR maybe you decide that you want to be a married man. An then you will have to struggle with do you want to be a priest or not.

But to start off a path to the priesthood already comparing yourself to someone else and then displaying signs of a lack of self worth just indicates that you need to work on yourself more first and really explore what you want to do with your life. Everyone is worthy and called to the religious life, not everyone wants to accept it, and not everyone can measure up to the level of standards that do not really determine if someone is really meant to be a priest because even if you cut the mustard in grades and smarts , it doesn’t judge your real intentions or heart, and vise verse, you may have the right intentions and heart, but if you dont measure up in education or lifestyle then you are passed up.

It isn’t good or bad, it is just the way the process is and hardly anyone will admit this.

But everything you are facing now will just follow you later, if things are bad for you now and you dont conqure your problems or learn to deal with them, they will just get worse, and if you are happy and solid now , you will be challenged later with how to answer and lead others who are not happy or are dealing with worse.

my friend is actually a psycholog. i just talk to him few min ago… he said that iam badly lack of confidance…
thank you so much… i will face this problem and try to solve it

There are plenty of saints that doubted their own abilities. I wish I could think of specific names.

Hi, Peter!

…just chuck it up and lay down and die, right?

NO!

God is not about the human condition.

If God Calls you to the Priesthood it is not because of what you can offer but what God can do with you.

There have been many incidents where the various “religious” would reject candidates…

St. Francis of Assisi was, in today’s lingo, a party animal and a soldier of fortune; even though he chose not to accept any formal duties (he remained without office and title) he became the leader of a wonderful Catholic body.

Mother Angelica knew as much about telecommunication and mass media as elephants know about making piña colada–yet, EWTN has grown to the one of the greatest networks in the world… her whole trust was in Jesus not her abilities or accomplishments!

The reality is that there will always be those who are more capable and less capable than ourselves.

Trust in God and not on your own understanding. Le the Holy Spirit Guide you. Yes, aspiration to the Priesthood is quite demanding… but if you avail yourself of a mentor (preferable one from the Franciscan Order) you may come to see your limitations not being the stumbling block that you suspect.

My prayers are with you.

May the Holy Spirit Bless you with the spirituality of St. Francis.

Maran atha!

Angel

I had horrible grades in high school, and pretty good grades in college. Don’t worry about that, there’s a lot more to life than how good your grades are or aren’t. And there are people who have had bad grades that have gone throughout the world teaching people about Christ. Worry about preaching the gospel and serving God.
