What is your parish doing for Fortnight for Freedom?

Im glad that our pastor, too, doesnt bring politics in. And he made clear just the other day why he doesnt.

Politics has become extremely toxic. Both sides. The breaking of the 9th Commandment has become a disease in our culture. And both Dems and Repubs do it without blinking.
It’s not a healthy thing to inject into our parish life.

That doesnt mean he isnt clear on the Church teaching. He is very clear. But it doesnt bring in the politics of it to poison our community.

And I am grateful.

9th…Thou shall not covet anything that is thy neighbor’s…wife, belongings etc. How does he attribute that to speaking out regarding religious freedom?

You are counting the Commandments like a Protestant. Catholics count the Ten Commandments differently. You are referring to the Eighth Commandment.

I’m sorry, I don’t comprehend what you are talking about.

This is my concern and it is the bishops’ concern too. Apparently, Catholic Church and others will be considered religious if it, through such agencies as Catholic Charities, only administers to those sharing same belief system. CC administers to all in need. If CC continues to do so, it loses its status as a religious organization.

Don’t you think the bishops have a right to protest the above change?

Have you figured out why it’s that way yet?

We’re called to be in the world (but not of it), and that world includes politics. Many of the good people have backed out, and that’s part of the problem.

Like someone said above, ignoring what happens in politics does not change the effect it has on us. But talking about it certainly does. And while the GOP candidates aren’t perfect, as Catholics, we have an obligation to support the GOP candidate in nearly every election, due to the pro-life issue.

No one has claimed that the bishop’s have said it’s ok, so I don’t know where you’re getting that from. However, simply being involved in politics does not constitute a violation of the 9th commandment. Like I said above, we need to be involved, and one can do that without breaking the commandments.

Look at it this way: If we don’t get involved, do you think it’ll get better or worse in this country?

Marie…when we send our Catholic men to fight in a war, does your pastor think we’re getting involved in politics then? Does he say that sending men to war makes them commit murder?

Right now our men are over in Afganistan fighting for the freedom of others. This includes freedom of religion for those who get stoned for practicing Catholicism etc. Don’t you think it odd that we should not fight for same here?

That is right. My posts in this thread had to do with the original question.

I am grateful for how my pastor handles it and why I am grateful. That was and is my only point.

I never intended into getting into some discussion beyond that.

Some people are very comfortable dealing in the political sphere.
For me, and I expect others as well, it’s a near occasion of sin if not enticing us to sin.

Those wholesome people who can engage in the political arena without breaking the 9th Commandment, hey more power to them. But I expect they are in the minority.

If some of you can do it without breaking the 9th, you are stronger in this area that I am…
