What kind of Catholic Church am I looking for?

I grew up in the southwest and attended old Catholic Mission churches. While Mass was given in English, the music was in Spanish. We didn’t sing our prayers we “chanted” them. The Mass was very solemn.

When I joined the Air Force, I moved from state to state and never found what Mass like we had back home. It seemed that everywhere I went, people were loud, sang loud, excited, and sometimes, rude. It seemed like a place where people would go to catch up with friends. Not just after Mass, which is fine, but during. I now live in Minnesota and would love to find a more traditional Mass. Some place very solemn. A place where there are no distractions and I can feel close to our Lord. What am I looking for? Is there a name for the more solemn Masses?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you are simply looking for a solemn parish. Most parish’s that celebrate the TLM (Tridentine Latin Mass) would qualify, but this is not just a NO Mass that is solemn. That Mass will be in Latin for the most part. From your post it does not sound like that is what you are looking for. Other than trying a TLM your best bet is to visit different parishes and find one that suites you. Unfortunately the Mass you describe is all too common now.

What part of Minnesota? There are a number of traditional Latin Masses, especially in the Twin Cities area, as well as St. Agnes which offers a very solemn Novus Ordo in Latin as well. Perhaps if you’re comfortable narrowing the area down a bit, we could be more specific.
 
I am actually in the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis. I think that it would be great to attend a Latin Mass, but I would like to understand what they are saying? Do you know of a traditional, English Mass around here?

My family has been to the Latin Mass at St. Augustine’s several times, but they also offer the NO in English there and as the poster aboved mentioned, it should be abuse-free and reverent: Here are the Mass times:

Be sure to talk to the priest afterwards, if you want to get “plugged in” to the parish a little bit. Remember, Catholics aren’t particularly well known for being extremely outgoing, but if you start participating in parish life I’m sure you’ll get to know the faithful quickly.

I know exactly how you feel. I live in Chicago and have a hard time finding the intimacy that you also are looking for. Where I did find it is in the weekday morning Mass. Big City people can be so rude. The beauty of the weekday morning Mass is that there are usually only 5 to 10 people there, and they are quiet, reverent, and like you, seek intimacy with our Lord. I also had to go to several different Churches ( all Catholic of course) before I found the priest I particularly liked. I now go to a very old but BEAUTIFUL Catholic Church in Chinatown. The two priests there are Xavierians and are very Holy men. Father Michael celebrates each and every Mass as if it’s his last one! It is almost impossible to get through one of his Masses without getting teary eyed. So go to Mass on weekday mornings! Seek out different Churches until you find the priest that does the Mass RIGHT!!! Seek and you will find. Peace…
 
Is there a Melkite, Ruthenian, Ukrainian, Romanian, or other Byzantine Catholic parish near you?

The Liturgy will be in English, most likely, but SUNG and CHANTED with incense throughout.

And then there are the other Eastern Catholic Churches.
