What goes through your mind when looking up at a starry night sky?

I think to myself “This could not have happened by chance”. 😀

The infinite magnitude of God’s Glory and Creation.

I wonder at the beauty of God’s creation - for me, a starry night, is the most beautiful and shows me just how great He is.

Since I’m closer to the bright lights and never have the opportunity to venture out to the far unlit unknown I can’t see many stars. If I could see them and if I was an atheist I would feel insignificant. Since I’m a believer I would probably feel gratitude to be a small, but not insignificant, speck of God’s creation. The starry skies would probably fill me with awe as I’m filled with awe when I contemplate God’s nature and the moral law within me.

I often wonder who was standing where I am when these particular photons were hurled in my direction.

Realizing how small I am, but humble at the same time. I like to talk to the night sky, have a simple conversation with God because it’s so quiet and everything has settled down for the day. I can pray more clearly.

I wonder what else is out there - extraterrestial life?

I think of all the people on our planet and how many other people are looking up at the starry night like I am. And I think of the other side of the planet where the sun is shining and people are busy with their busy
lives.

I think of the vastness of God, I think of the mystery of the night sky that is hidden at day light. I think of how one star sheds light in the darkest night and each child of God is called to bring the light of Christ to our world that lives, lately in the darkness of sin.
And I search through multitude of stars in the midnight sky in hopes of seeing a shooting star.
A speeding star that reminds me of Christmas and Angels singing–Glory to God in the highest…

I sometimes think of the constancy of the stars. Here on earth there is only turmoil. In the heavens there is peace. I find that reassuring.

When my family and friends are far away, I look up at the stars at night and wonder if they’re also looking up and seeing those same stars. It makes me feel more connected.

Some really nice replies here similar to my own thoughts 🙂
I also feel protection and being looked after walking about under a sky full of stars ,heaven close by.

You mean “looking at a star” because with light pollution I’m usually lucky if I can see one. 😃

Mostly when I look at anything in nature and it looks cool, I say, “Thank you God for showing that sky/ tree/ star to me, that’s very nice.”

When I am lucky enough to see many stars I think about everything that may be going on in their individual little solar systems, as well as admiring how they look.

The earth looks peaceful too if seen from a distance.

If we got close to those stars or observed them over a long enough period of time, or knew how to look as astronomers do, we’d see all sorts of turmoil going on with the stars. We just miss most of it because we’re very far away and our human lifespans are too short to see all the ups and downs of a star and solar system.

You are correct, of course, and as a scientist I am aware that stars vary in brightness, move in orbits, and explode. And the earth, for all its natural turmoil (volcanoes, storms, tsunamis, asteroid impacts, droughts, fires) has remained remarkably hospitable to life for billions of years. Perhaps even man-made turmoils are proceeding according to God’s plan. That too is a reassuring thought.

I try to look for that too! Some nights I will see it and get too excited.
