What language is spoken in Heaven?

Since there are no bodies - but souls/spirits in Heaven, (aside from Our Lady and Our Lord’s risen Body)**

There will be after the Resurrection.

Joysong is on the right track here. Remember that language is an aspect of our temporal, earthly existence. Prior to the bodily resurrection, we shall be pure spirit without those faculties that are of a material nature, such as sight, smell, taste and hearing. Language as we know it will not exist. Recall that God, and Heaven, exist outside of time. The whole concept of “thought” as we know it does not exist there. In Heaven, our spirit is united to the Divine and perfect Will of God. Language exists, in part, to express concepts to aid in understanding. Since, in Heaven, there is only perfect worship of the Trinity, we will “understand” just as the angels do - instantly and all at once.

As St. Augustine said in De Trinitate, it is really quite impossible to speak of God and things in eternity in temporal terms because anything finite, no matter how greatly conceived, will always fall short of anything infinite. He wrote, “now since we ought to think about the Lord our God always, and can never think about him him as he deserves; since at all times we should be praising him and blessing him, and yet no words of ours are capable of expressing him, I begin by asking him to help me understand and explain what I have in mind and to pardon any blunders I might make… We firmly believe and maintain that whatever we say about that unchanging and invisible nature, that supreme and all-sufficient life, cannot be measured by the standard of things visible, changeable, mortal and deficient.” (De Trinitate, Book V, Paragraphs 1-2, emphasis mine)
 
Maybe there wll be millions of languages and dialects and some will be earthly and some beyond earthly language. Why not? God invented our languages.

When our thought are human then we write human , while on the earth we need to relate and this is the language God has given us.
Remember that at the tower of Babel God confused the people’s language ( or hearing) God didn’t say He changed, so when without the sinfulness of humanness and in the life of the spirit (with God) then we will not need to relate as we think in the human way. As St Paul said “what I see now is a dim image but then, I will see all things as God sees them”.

In the spirit (with God)there is NO study in the spirit there is NO pain, no hurt, no sadness, and we will see all things as God sees.

My OT Professor in seminary was absolutely dogmatic in insisting that God speaks Sephardic Hebrew!

I suspect from your wide grin you say this in jest, but I’ll comment nonetheless. Sign language is not possible for purely spiritual beings. With what would you sign? You have no body, and therefore no hands. This is the same reason why language, as we know it, is also impossible - no body, no vocal chords, no mouth.

Yes, but there are those who died and they appear to the saints and talk to them speaking the language a certain saint can understand. I guess this is the will of God why a soul have to speak a language to a saint because human as we are needs intermediary so that we may understand each other. So I think there is no language in Heaven but they understand each other without any words.

Just an opinion but in conclusion I don’t really know. Unless someone from heaven will talk to us and answer us this question. Even if they tell us only God’s will can help us understand heaven.

Oh, you are absolutely correct about the apparitions. Such is the magnificent power and mercy of God!

Remember, angels are also purely spiritual beings, and yet they appear many times in the Sacred Scriptures - and not only as voices, but in physical bodies. St. Augustine discusses how this is accomplished in some length in Book 3 of De Trinitate (and somewhat in Book 2, though this book deals more with theophanies than angels).

Words (“is that sweater beige or off-white?”) is for humans who always need to guard themselves against misinterpretation. I can’t imagine people misunderstanding each other in heaven. I can’t imagine any earthly language is good enough to describe heaven (Just try to talk about infinity for five minutes and you’ll see what I mean). But music … we already know there’s music in heaven. And music is infinite …
