I think that family is an environment where children feel loved and cared for by their caregivers and also live in the same home as their caregivers. To a child, family is very important. Children also need a stable family; loving caregivers who will stay in their life until they are an adult.

Those are all very important, I agree, but your mother and father are more than your caregivers. Your relationship with them is one that extends back in time farther than your birth or even their marriage and that will, in the normal course, go forward in time indefinitely. Your siblings, too, have more in common with you than just having the same person who made your pancakes and saw to it that you brushed your teeth and got tucked in at night. In its fullest and most realized sense, family is about far more than the care of this generation. It is the knitting together of many generations through time.

Yes and I was also thinking of children that are raised by others b/c their parents died, etc.

You are right though. That’s one of the main reasons that I had a 2nd baby. I wanted DD to have someone they would always be connected to.
