What makes someone a professional apologist?

What exactly is the criteria for being a professional apologist?

How would you classify me? (Im looking for serious answers 🙂 well, kind of at least) (you see people ask me what I do for a living and it would be cool to have a title rather than say, “well I am lecturer of theology for the Roman Catholic Diocese”)
  1. I have my BA and Masters in Theology and I am now studying towards my doctorate.
  2. I work for my bishop as a theology lecturer for the diocese. . .
  3. I have a couple of cds that I sale with my talks on them
  4. I get hate mail
  5. Im personal friends with some big wigs like Scott Hahn,
    Mark Miravalle, Ben Wiker, and Fr. Don Calloway
  6. My wife gets upset that I always bring up theology during dinner
  7. My daughter thinks im a nerd because I read too much
Anyways… I dont KNOW what I am… Im not a professor because I dont work at a university, but im not sure if I would fit under the ‘apologist’ criteria either… anybody have an idea?
 
Sounds to me like you are a Christian who loves to spread the word about Jesus Christ and the Church He founded.

Why…you’re an Evangelist!!!
 
Getting hate mail and being a nerd are not absolute requirements, but overall, you sound pretty professional to me.
 
I find that you are an amateur if you just do it… you become a professiional when you get paid to do it.

Notice… I did not give a requirement for the quality. You can get paid to be lousy at something, or overpaid to be mediocre.

The difference between an amateur and a professional is that the professional gets paid for his efforts while the amateur does not. (Frequently the quality of work is better, but by no means always; I’ve seen amateur work that puts professional work to shame. Think “open-source software.”)

So … do you get paid to speak to non-Catholics about the faith?
