What Order would these men be with?

Several nights ago, stopped by our Chapel of Perpetual Adoration very late at night to worship. It has a cipher lock on the door, which I forgot the combination. Not wanting to disturb anyone who may be inside, I thought it best to wait until either someone came out, or another person drove up, so I could enter.

Several minutes later, 2 men arrived wearing robes I’ve never seen before. They did not speak English, but understood my dilemma & allowed me entrance, and we worshiped together in the Chapel that night.

Their robes were very colorful, with purple tunics over an off-white robe, about knee length. The most striking thing was they were both wearing polished knee high black leather boots, similar to what a race horse jockey wears. They each wore a chain for a sash around their waist, from which their rosary and a chaplet hung.

Most Brothers I’ve seen wear very simple and humble brown or black robes, never seen outfits like this, particularly with boots and chains.

BTW, I was very pleasantly surprised that when I entered our small chapel, found about 10 people already inside. Thought that was rather amazing for a weekday night around midnight. 🙂

If they’re who I think they were, they were Eraldi del Vangelo, Heralds of the Gospel. I don’t think they’re a religious order proper, but some sort of confraternity or lay association. Striking, aren’t they, with the boots? I’ll look them up and check for you.

Excellent, Thank you!! Yes, it is this group, and I remember the decal on their van window being the same as on this website.

Striking is a good word, i remember thinking to myself that these were the best dressed Brothers or Friars Iv’e ever seen. 🙂

Again, thanks for sharing this. Looks like they have a presence right here in Houston, according to their web, I wasn’t aware of.

Cool. Very interesting. The companions looks like a great Thrid order.

The Heralds of the Gospel does not mention requirements for regular members of the order in terms of age, etc.

I noted their web says they are primarily young men & women.

Now the two I seen, one would be considered ‘young’, I’d guesstimate maybe 25 years old. The other gentleman had some years on me, I’d guess he was in his mid 60’s.

And I haven’t been considered ‘young’ in many years, unfortunately. But age is a state of mind.

I agree, a very interesting association.

Finally I know who these people are. My wife and I saw one of them in Rome outside the Vatican. We tried to talk to him, but he didn’t speak English and we didn’t speak his language. Very Striking indeed.

Glad to have helped. I saw them at St Mary Major’s and HAD to know who they were too 😉 but luckily I speak a little Italian.

Very interesting religious garb. I’ve never heard or seen of them before. With the large cross on the front, they remind me of the Crusaders.

Wow they do dress like the crusaders. Anyone by chance know what order wears the all white robes?

No they wear brown. Trinitarians also wear white but with a blue and red cross.

You might be right. There were Dominican and Carmelite sisters at the school I attended. There were far more Dominican sisters than Carmelite sisters at the school. The Dominican sisters wore mostly white, and if I remember, the Carmelites did wear brown garb. Maybe I’m just mixing the two in my mind. 🙂

Can anyone give me some good information on the Mercedarians. From what I read if I was to follow a vocation it would be with them.

AdvanceAlways, you’re right:

The Dominicans wear white habits, with a black cloak (cappa) over.

The Carmelites wear brown habits with a white cloak over. (I have some idea that their cloak is off-white but maybe this is just imagination; I have never actually seen a Carmelite monk.)

The Dominican cloaks are always used in imagery, though not always worn today (specially in Texas where I live); I haven’t spent nearly so much time looking at Carmelite pictures, so I can’t say for them.

The Carthusians also wear white habits, though you’ll probably never see one of them outside their enclosure.
