What other forums on the Internet are similar to CAF?

I really could not find a neat category into which this post “fits”, but this one seems to be the closest.

I have many thoughts on the imminent end of CAF (I never thought I’d be writing those words), but I need to collect them first. Now’s not the time.

But since we will no longer have CAF, I’d like to pose the question — what other forums, accessible to lay Catholics and supportive of the magisterium of the Church, are there on the internet, so that those of us who have found a “place” here, could continue the work we do here? I would really wish to avoid “fever swamps” of all types. I’ve heard of a couple, are there more? What are they like? How are they similar to CAF? How are they different?

I have quipped, almost entirely in jest (I said “almost”), that if my circumstances were different, I’d be pleased to start such a site myself. There could be volunteer moderators, and the only costs, as far as I can see, would be online maintenance fees (server space, tech support, etc.). But my circumstances don’t allow it. If I were a man of great means, in a position to be a financial “angel”, I’d have a mind to contact CAF, say “how much does it take per month to keep this thing going?”, and arrange to provide the funds. However, I am anything but that. I am just a retiree living in humble circumstances.

Just random thoughts. I’m sure I’ll have more before this is all over.

Any suggestions as to where aspiring lay apostles and amateur apologists can redirect their efforts, I’d be much obliged. Oremus pro invicem.

And one more thing (with apologies to Lieutenant Columbo)…

Will the existing CAF archives continue to be available on Catholic Answers as a reference resource?

Please, somebody say “yes”.

I mean, at least a few of us are already here. Catholic Common Sense
I’ll check it out, hadn’t heard of it.

It might be neat for those of us who wish to do so, to use the same noms de Web that we use on CAF, so we will all know each other.

If there could be a general consensus as to which forum would be best for “CAF refugees” (“CAF orphans”?), we could all basically “forklift” ourselves over to that site.

ETA just now — looks like some of us are already there. I will probably go on board tonight. Onward and upward! (Or as C.S. Lewis said, “Christians never say goodbye!”)

I posted this in another thread but will repost here:

Most of Reddit is a cesspool, and it trends heavily liberal and atheist, but this is a very good subreddit for faithful Catholics. It is very active, the mods are fair and efficient as far as I’ve seen, and there are numerous active deacons, priests, and even a bishop that posts fairly regularly on there (clergy are identified with flair next to their usernames on there).

Most of the posters on there seem to be orthodox and faithful Catholics from what I’ve seen and I would even say it is probably more traditional/conservative than CAF overall based on my experience.

A recent thread re Catholic FB groups:

Catholic Facebook Groups? (that are not extreme?) Popular Media
Does anyone know of any Catholic facebook groups that are not full of political stuff about elections/ COVID theories / etc not focused on criticizing the Holy Father or bemoaning the current state of the Church not focused on “traditional Catholicism” not constantly posting unapproved revelations about the End Times from sites like Countdown to the Kingdom and Spirit Daily In short - are there any Catholic Facebook groups that are just ordinary Catholic groups where a broad range of Catholic…

I swear I didn’t have any inside information.

To be honest I’ve just been disheartened lately because every time I come on this forum, somebody is either telling me I’m going to Hell for being a Democrat, or posting some misogynistic thread. Some days it has really gotten me down, and there has not been much interest by management in doing much of anything about it.

I’m going to Hell for being a Democrat,
I don’t think that. Some Republicans vote Democrat quite often and vice versa.
some misogynistic thread
Well, I mean, sometimes them dames… (I hope you know I am kidding).

Yeah, I’m not disagreeing with you there.

I was going to ask the same thing. Usually the other Catholic forums I encounter are radical-traditionalists or full sedevacantists…

The forum @adamhovey1988 linked seems like a nice choice, though it doesn’t have as much activity as here yet.

I also set up an alternative Discourse forum (trial only, will be open for 14 days) in case the Catholic Common Sense thing doesn’t work out.

PM me if you want the link to it.

So glad you asked. I was going to start a thread like this too. I’ll check out the link provided. Also there is “Living the Sacrament” for married folks supporting each other through using NFP in their marriage. There’s a women’s forum and a separate men’s forum.

Already there.
We shall see how it works out.
I’m there as well, but haven’t been on for ages. Created my account when CAF changed platforms in case CAF imploded then. I just logged back on. I’m the same username over there. The board was created, if memory serves, by a banned CAF member. But he’s OK.

Hopefully we’ll see y’all there.

I’m seeing what I hope will be a “mass migration” to Catholic Common Sense. Thanks, @adamhovey1988, for suggesting it. I’m already on it.

I’m not one to discuss my feelings on this or that — I try not even to acknowledge them to myself, I find it helps with the sense of detachment and indifference we should all cultivate (this per Loyola) — but if I can let my guard down just this once, I’ve been in a pretty foul mood today over the news announcing the imminent demise of CAF. I don’t agree with the decision one little bit. I’ve tried to joke with myself — “well, you’ll get in bed an hour earlier at night, and you’ll get back at least ten hours a week, that’s like getting an additional day off work!” — but let’s just say I’ve had my thoughts. I will share more in the coming days and weeks.

Guys, with sincere concern: Please reconsider placing all your eggs in that basket, unless you know something I don’t. I read in another thread that the admin of that site hasn’t been active there since 2017 or something? And the admin is the only one who can appoint mods etc. And I imagine the admin could close the entire thing down same-day on a whim.

While I’m not personally planning (yet) to maintain a presence in online Catholic communities, I am seeing how important some other people find this, and out of sincere concern for y’all, my advice would be to make sure it’s a trusted person from CAF (or better yet, multiple) who set up their own forum (e.g. on Discord) as admins, so the whole thing doesn’t come crashing down if a bewildered stranger (suddenly receiving a bunch of emails that people are using his old forum) decides to stop hosting a forum that’s suddenly been filled by people he may disagree with (didn’t someone say it was someone who left CAF in the first place? he might not like everything the new influx of CAFers say), or if a single admin dies or otherwise abandons the project.

Maybe it’ll go fine and this Catholic Common Sense guy will be thrilled to support this migration. But my advice would be to build something new with an admin you already know and trust to manage the forum the way you’re looking for.
