What proof that Christ never lived?

Over the years I’ve encountered skeptics who believe there is no proof that Christ really lived … that such a claim had to have been fabricated. I’ve never seen proof of this, nor am I aware of the likelihood that such proof could exist anywhere.

What say you?

Bart Ehrman (atheist, liberal biblical scholar) refutes this claim, pointing out he knows thousands of scholars of the ancient world, but not one of them denies the existence of Jesus. The only areas you find people promoting the idea that Christ was a myth are on blogs and youtube videos (like the oft-debunked Zeitgeist film).

“Atheist groups are much less intimidated proclaiming Jesus as a myth, notwithstanding that John Dickson (Founding Director of the Center of Public Christianity) challenged that if any atheist could find a full professor of Classics, Ancient History or the New Testament in any Accredited University in the world who believes that Jesus never lived, he would eat a page out of his Bible (6). His Bible has remained quite safe”;

This is too funny.
The radio host is so fantastically ignorant. He’s doing nothing to advance anything except his lame agenda.
Do people actually listen to this guy?

Boring.

No one who denies Christ existed has explained why His Church has survived for two thousand years, how His teaching originated and why it is the basis of the Declaration of Human Rights accepted by all civilised people throughout the world…

Yes, unfortunately that’s what passes for rational thought in New-Atheist circles.

As for evidence of Christ we have written accounts dating from within decades of his life. The idea that such a myth could develop and come to be believed by such a number of people so temporally/geographically close to it is utterly ridiculous.

There is no proof for this assertion whatsoever. Jesus is mentioned in four Gospels which are meant to be eyewitness accounts. Even if they weren’t he is still a huge character in the Gospels and is extremely unlikely to just have been completely made up. Jesus is mentioned in other non-Christian sources as well like Josephus. Certain of the apostles were Jesus’s cousins and are mentioned to be as such (though they are referred to as ‘brothers’). If Jesus never even existed and nobody ever even saw him it would be nearly impossible to convince anyone to think you have a family relation to him. Moreover, many of the apostles were willing to die for Jesus. It is utterly stupid and ridiculous to think that they died for someone who they certainly knew never even existed. Nearly no Biblical historian or scholar would ever assert that Jesus never existed, and that shows a lot, since most of them are either liberal theologians or atheists/agnostics.

To deny Jesus existed is facile. To deny the truth of His teaching is another proposition altogether - as Richard Dawkins has discovered…

People are not interested in truth that much anymore.
The agenda of a producer of a documentary, first think is to keep you watching couple of commercials, and he does this by saying something “unheard off” “extaordinary” “novel” “digging out hidden things” . Also to excite your feelings, the music will blow your mind, because somewhere it is said something like “mindblowing documentary”.
Then couple of unrelevant details around the subject are going to be discussed but with “revolutionary conclusions on the subject”. People have their feelings excited, have the feeling that there something important is disscussed, and if they like what they see they are willing to accept the conclusions; and go watching the next one, so kind of everybody is happy.

Apparently there was in roman days a man called Publius Lentulus, the then president in Judea about AD 33 who wrote to the roman senate a description of Jesus Christ.
This was printed in the Meadville, Pennsylvania republican in 1873. It contained what he looked like, his mannerisms and the writers opinion of Jesus.

Its a beautiful description too long to type up now but apparently this is in the civic records of the romans. I’ve not tried to research this to see if it’s legitimate though.

There’s a spectrum of stances on this ranging from “Jesus Christ never existed” to “Jesus did exists, but the stories of him are embellished and exaggerated.” (There are some people that identify as Christians that also don’t believe that Jesus Christ existed, but that’s a discussion for another day about the many positions that can be conflated in the phrase “believe in”). Some related discussion on this is going on in the thread about “.” I thought Tyrion did a nice summary of aspects of claims to be considered.

The proof for me is the internal truth of the Scriptures. No one could have dreamed up something so fantastic. In the entire pagan world at the time of Christ’s birth no one had a concept of a God who was pure spirit who created the world out of nothing and who created man for Himself, for whom He was a personal God and to Whom man would be accountable, That man had a spiritual soul that would survive death and that man was destined to live eternally as a person composed of his reunited body and soul;that there is a Trinity of Persons in the One God, that Jesus Christ was true God and true man, and that He was conceived by the power of the Spirit through an ever virgin, Mary.
And the teachings of Jesus so far surpasses anything known in the pagan world as to approach the fantastic.

No man or group of men could ever have dreamed up something so fantastic.
Nothing the pagan world even remotely approaches this.

Ehrman is agnostic

Anyway no serious scholar, even atheist and liberal, buy into the ‘Christ myth theory’ or deny Jesus existed.

Only a few radical individuals from the ‘internet infidels’ websites keep pushing that button, but no scholar pays attention to them… they are the young earth creationists of biblical schoarship

An interesting read: “Jesus in the Talmud” byt Peter Schäfer

The Talmud says a lot of horrible things about Jesus (as expected seen it’s written by detractors) but claims he was a real person and that he and his disciples ‘healed people’.

I suppose that if even those who were contrary to Christianity attest that Jesus really lived, it’s a good indication he did.

Yes an most liberal ‘extreme scholars’ take the latter position.

The “Jesus Christ never existed” is a niche position, that has lost all credibility in academia for decades now.
