I have heard very conflicting stories about what happened to Galileo Galilei when he was punished for speaking against the geocentric model of the universe.
On one hand I hear that he was punished severely, threatened, and even harmed. That he was silenced by the Church and locked away. Basically that the Church persecuted him in a violent, no-tolerance, no-mercy fashion. On the other hand, I’ve heard that he was punished but that it was minor: Put under house arrest, he was allowed to continue his studies and was paid for them.
Could you shed some light on this mystery? Perhaps provide some recommended reading?
