What should I do about Catholic Relief Services?

I was very, very disappointed recently to find out that Catholic Relief Services was distributing brochures in Africa that gave information about so-called “safe-sex” practices (i.e. condom use). ignatius.com/Magazines/CWR/grisez_april08.htm Unfortunately, this was something I’ve been fearing for a long time about CRS. I’ve seen similar things occur with Catholic Charities, and I’ve therefore long feared that something similar would be exposed with CRS. I met a woman who was one of their fundraisers a couple of years ago; she was really good at what she did (i.e. finding large donations), but unfortunately she had a lot of liberal, secular, heterodox ideas about what she thought was Catholic social teaching. Very un-catechized.

Up until now, CRS has been one of my top charities. They just sent me an email about relief efforts they’re providing to the tragedy in Myanmar. I want to give to them, but I don’t know now. . .

Any thoughts on how to resolve this? If any of you are good at writing letters, I’d appreciate some ideas.

Thanks

Just make sure the claims that you are hearing are true. Also remember that just because one person or group within a charity is doing something wrong that doesn’t mean it is the policy of the charity as a whole. The charity needs to reign the people in.

Look at what Catholic Charities San Francisco was doing. They were doing gay adoptions until the larger group and the Bishop found out. That doesn’t mean that the entire charity supports it.
