Should I just give it to a thrift store? Any other ideas??

You could have all private information off,and donate it to a family who can not afford one.

Is there a local middle school or high school that might use it to educate students on parts, assembly, etc.

That is, of course, after that hard drive is effectively wiped of all info.

If you get rid of it (sometimes BestBuy will recycle them for you), make sure you take the hard drive out, in case you have any sensitive information on there, like bank data, etc. There are folks who know how to harvest those and grab off that info.

Go with what @ahs said. Remove the hard drive and just keep it. Check with BestBuy and see if they will recycle the system. You could donate it to a school, but they might no want it with no hard drive and operating system. Still, I’d check with a school to see.

I suggest stashing it away in a closet or attic while telling yourself that you will re-purpose it or need parts off it one day. Many years later, after your wife finds it while cleaning and yells at you for keeping “junk” around the house you can finally toss it. At least that is my preferred method.
