What should I do with my gently used Catholic books?

Could you start a library at your Parish?

I’ve been thinking about doing that.

As for books that may come in handy at Adoration, ask the Priest if a table can be set up at Church and books donated for Adorators to read while holy hour.

At our church as well, we have an area that has books with a sticker that says “Do not remove from Church”…maybe start something like that. 👍

Parish library was my thought as well. Our parish has one already and it would be simple to just drop off the books, but if your parish doesn’t have a library, you might want to ask the powers that be if it might be a useful ministry.

You could also take them to a university Newman center or similar Catholic community center, to a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store, a Catholic high school, etc.

I’ve donated a number of my books to our parish library, but I suspect they are gathering dust. I never see anyone even looking at the books in the library.

I think you should contact your public library and see if they accept donations–for the shelves. If they are just going to throw them into a book sale, I might think twice. I remember reading an article in National Register that said that Catholic books in the public library circulate much more than in a parish library.

You might want to ask your parish secretary if you can leave them on a table after Mass so someone can take them. Or, you can ask your pepetual adoration coordinator.

Or, if you live my neighborhood, sell them at the local used book dealer. I love finding Catholic literature at our Half-price book store. I can then get books that otherwise I could not afford. 🙂

I think all the suggestions you have been given are wonderful and worthwhile. Perhaps I could add one. If your parish has an RCIA program maybe one of the people in the program would benefit from a gift of one of your books or maybe the RCIA team leaders could use them in preparing lessons or they could give them away as they see fit.

That’s a great idea!!! I vote for this one. 👍

I have decided to donate the books to my school library. Thank you to everyone who suggested ideas.👍
