What Should I Do with my Money on Wednesday?

This Wednesday, I will be attending a sporting event. I got free tickets, but you did have the option of making a donation through the Internet, most likely by giving a credit card number. I did not, but **if **they have collection boxes at the event, I would be more than happy to contribute to the charity, so long as it goes along with Catholic teachings. ( I am not certain that there will be money boxes at the event to donate.) However, where I will be going, there might be a poor person on the street. Should I also give money to that person? If I were to give money to that person, my family might gave me looks, but I certainly could stay in the back while we are walking and give the money then. But we also might be on the opposite side of the street of the poor person, so I am not sure what I should do now.

Thank you so much, and may God bless you all!

I don’t think you have to worry, your heart is in the right place. It’s entirely up to you where your money goes. 🙂

You might see a poor person asking for money, you might not. If you do, decide there and then.

Research the charity ahead of time and decide if it’s something worth supporting. Give money to the street person if you feel so inclined.

It depends on what you mean my “poor person”. Where I live, we have a homeless population that is largely dependent on drugs and alcohol due to addictions. Handing them money directly would largely result in them making a quick trip to the liquor store, which doesn’t help them. I tend to take money I would give to them and donate it to the local homeless shelter instead (which happens to be run by a Catholic charity) where they will receive shelter and food, but not drugs or alcohol.

I never give money directly to a person on the streets. Currently I don’t know where the homeless shelter is. Where I lived before, I would direct the person to the shelter which provided free meals at a set times during the day. I knew when those times were. They also provided free clothes twice a month and free food monthly. Charities generally write checks to landlords, utility services, etc. to prevent enabling a person who may use them for drugs, alcohol or purposes other than what is intended.
I live in town. It is interesting that for the first week or so I was harassed for money. Now as I walk I am seldom bothered. Even when I go to other parts of the city, those asking for money discretely fold their signs as I come by.

I used to live in Kansas City, where I was frequently asked for money. I generally kept Subway giftcards on me and gave them to people who asked. I suppose they could trade them for drugs if they find a drug dealer with really bad munchies, but I think most of them were really hungry.

You are overthinking this! You seem to be scrupulous.

I would always feel guilty passing by a homeless person, until one day my parents told us you can never be too sure, because they might use the money for drugs.

That is why my family usually does NOT give money to beggars, but there are some occasions where we do.

If you really want to help them out, ask your family if you guys can make home-made lunch bags and give it to any homeless people you see. That would be great for them.
