I’ve recently read Thomas Merton’s early works and St. Augustine’s “Confessions.” If I want to further my literary journey into Catholic philosophy with a focus on contemplation, what should I read next?

Sort of tough, but still good: How about Josef Pieper’s Leisure, the Basis of Culture?

The Letters of Abelard and Heloise is good stuff. G.K. Chesterton is good too. If you haven’t done so, reading the Bible and reflecting on it as a literary and philosophical document can be good as well.

Imitation of Christ - Kempis

Seven Strorey Mountain - Merton

New Seeds in Contemplation - Merton

Ah ha! I had forgotten G.K. Chesterton…thanks for the insight!

Nietzsche “Beyond Good and Evil” then “Thus Spoke Zarathustra”

Maybe some Luther to really teach you some Catholic thought.

I have a suggestion for everyone–before it even begins, let’s not get distracted into an argument. Just keep offering Arne constructive suggestions if you have some. Best regards, cp

I recommend “Meditations from Mechthild of Magdeburg” - by Henry Carrigan Jr.

The Autobiography of St. Margaret Mary will definitely help 😉

There’s no one for contemplation like the Carmelites. So, you must read Sts. Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and Therese of Lisieux.
