What to do during Lent

Hi all,
I am in the process of converting, and will enter the Church at Easter.

I am thinking a lot about Lent and what it means. Pretty much every year since I was 16 or I have given up chocolate, biscuits, cake etc and I’ll do the same this year too. I plan to again this year. But I was wondering what else I was doing? I haven’t been as regular as I should have been in saying the Rosary recently, so I’m going to make sure I do it daily during Lent too (and then by the time Lent finishes it will be habit I hope), but is there anything else I should do? I plan to get to Mass for Ash Wednesday too, is it a Holy Day of Obligation? And is it different from usual (I have seen mention of holy ashes as a sacramental - I hope that is right, but what are holy ashes?).

This week’s RCIA class was cancelled at short notice, so I couldn’t ask there.

Hi Adele, and welcome home! The more sacrifices you make for Lent the merrier! For whomever you offer it up. 🙂 You could join in on the 40 Days for Life campaign, and fast and pray the Rosary every day for Lent. And yes, Ash Wednesday is a Holy Day of Obligation, and you can receive the ashes, if you’ve been baptized already. God bless.

Remember, also, to abstain from eating meat (fish is okay) on Fridays and Ash Wednesday; abstinence **and **fasting on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday. Fasting is considered to be 1 full meal and 2 smaller meals that together do not add up to 1 whole meal. Fasting is mandatory for those between the ages of 18 and 59 and abstinence is for those over 14.

Those are the rules in the U.S. In most other countries, it is still the rule to abstain on **all **Fridays of the year (unless it’s a solemnity). Most important, though, the reason for Lent is to do an act of penance.

Oops. I just saw on another thread that Ash Wednesday actually is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation (and I verified it!) - just wanted to correct the record. Of course, its still a good way to begin Lent. 🙂
 
🙂 No bother. Thank you for your answers. I went this morning anyway. It was a beautiful service, I am so glad I went. It just makes me more impatient for Easter though 😃 😉 There was also a book of readings available, one a day, so I’m going to do that as well as the Rosary. Thank you both again.
