I remember hearing that there are some organizations which want old Christmas cards. Does anyone know about this?

The St. Jude Ranch for Children used to accept card fronts, but they have been overwhelmed with them, they are asking people to refrain from sending more. stjudesranch.org/Content/cardprogram.asp

I have seen infomation about recycled card programs in magazines like Woman’s Day or Family Circle off and on over the years, you might check there. (I no longer carry a subscription, or I’d offer to look).

Good luck!

We save the nicest looking cards from year to year and put them up agian the following year. Having hundreds of beautiful Christmas cards around the mantle piece looks awesome!

give them to your CCD director, we use them all year long for a variety of purposes, most often for making favors and gifts for the nursing home residents.

I have a friend who saves and gets at flea markets all kinds of used greeting cards, tears off the part with writing, and uses the blank sides as stationary. her letters to me are things of beauty, I never know what the picture will be, such a joy.

When I was little, my dad used to create an advent calendar with the pictures from old Christmas cards, and each day we would open the next window and see a little Christmas-themed picture. It was so exciting to see what the next picture would be 🙂

You can save them if you want to. But incase you don’t, you can
make cards out of them. Buy some paper, and cut out the scenes
you like, and use a glue stick and make new cards out of them,.
or even stationary sets. You can have tons of fun with this 🙂

Last year I cut out all the beautiful Christmas card fronts, or just a tree or nativity scene, etc. This year, I pulled them out and my kids got creative making new ornaments for the tree! (And if they get destroyed, oh well! New ones next year!). My kids are small, 3 1/2 and 2, so I have to keep things simple.

Also, at my mom’s church they cut out the beautiful cards and use them as bookmarks for the mass books… makes it easier to find today’s readings, and if they get lost or torn, it’s okay. Might be a suggestion to your parish.

I really like the idea of a home-made advent calendar though… how cool!

God bless,
-Amy

I do alot of scrapbooking and I’ll use the card fronts for the books. If a family picture or kids picture came with the card from the sender, that’s one page for my scrapbook. Sometimes, the entire card is just to beatiful to cut up or throw away so I actually have a scrapbook dedicated to just cards we’ve received :o (I know, some of you are  )… marriage/wedding, thank you, birthday, congrats on baby’s birth, baptism… it’s almost in chronological order so it’s really cool to look through and see these…

That’s a good idea! I didn’t want to throw away the cards sent to us after the birth of our baby, but there’s no space for them in his baby book. And now we have a bunch of 1st birthday cards, too!

Have you heard about the lady who made a scrapbook page for every day of her daughter’s life? Now *that’s * obsessive 😃

 Neurotically so!!! Guess you can do that when you are a SAHM with one child and nothing else to do while the baby sleeps.

I always tape them to the inside of the front door, then on January 1 they go in the recycling bin. Not too creative I guess, but I really have to battle clutter around my house.

I do put the pictures that people send in a little album though. So, I am not terribly unsentimental.

I used to do some scrapbooking of old family pictures and documents in putting together the family history. I would take Christmas cards that has borders, cut out the middles with an X-acto knife, and use them as mattes for photographs. Some of them are very elegant, with velvet and foil, and really frame a picture luxuriously.

I’m a SAHM with one child, but heck, I’d be on top of the world if I had spare time to throw around doing that 🙂 But I guess I have time to come on here… :hmmm:

Have kids make Grandparent’s Christmas Gift: A Placemat 🙂

Cut out the pictures in different shapes and afix them to a construction paper. Cover it with contact paper.

My kids loved this. I even sent a note home one year to his classmates asking if they are going to just toss their cards, if I could have them (explained my project, too). Grandparent’s like it too because it is something the kids made that they can show off.

Use white-out over the signature and send them out next year to someone else.

We keep them in a basket on our kitchen table. And when we sit down to eat and say grace…we choose a card and pray for the sender. We also remind the one who sent us the card, that we prayed for them during the year. Afterwards, we either keep the cards we like or we donate them to the local adult day care center. Their patients seem to love them.

Have a blessed Christmas and a Holy New Year

Or ask for them back and just resend them next year 👍

If your church has a “giving tree” during Advent and Christmas, the fronts of old Christmas cards can be used as the “ornaments” (with the gift lists written onto to the unprinted side of the card fronts).

I have to be honest…I throw them away!

But I do like the gift tag idea…thanks for it!
