What to do with pornographic books?

Take them to the used book store or trash them?
Here’s my problem: If I trade them at the book store is this contributing to another person’s sin? But, when I was an atheist I would take books like “Mere Christianity” to trade in because I felt that just because I didn’t want them didn’t mean that someone else couldn’t get something out of them. Also, to throw them away is like book burning. That’s a huge and scary step for me. Am I my brother’s moral censor?
Whatever you’re reply is to the porn, does it also apply to the anti-Christian books?

If destroying them feels like a scary idea (I assume you mean “morally / ethically scary”?) then maybe the best you can do is to trade them in.
Myself, I’d destroy them, for much the same reason I’d smash a Ouija board. Pornography is evil and harmful.
I’m sure the people who want porn can get some without your help.
 
I would personally advocate your destroying them entirely. Pornography is one of the few things that is always an occasion to sin. The most anybody can “get out of” pornographic material (well, qua pornography, I suppose it would work fine as kindling, or a paperweight, or recycling) is sin. We are, in sense, our brother’s moral censor. Cain’s disposition is a very atheistic one. If it really feels too difficult, try using them when you need some kindling for a fire, and put them to the best use they can be put! Or, if that feels like too much as well, give them to somebody you trust, perhaps a priest, and tell them to either destroy it or keep it away from others. That is the best advice I can give. I really, really advise against trading them in. How would you feel if you learned your son were on the verge of quitting, saw that book of yours, and found he just could not do it?

As regards other “anti-Christian” literature, on the other hand, I do not think burning them would be the best option. There are many legitimate, moral things to be gotten out of such books. Examples would include broadening one’s understanding of the way people think, arming oneself for apologetics, or being assured that even in an atheist (or pagan, or agnostic, or whatever) there can be found sense and wisdom. And thank you for not throwing away C.S. Lewis! 🙂 I would feel sad if I learned somebody were burning Mere Christianity or The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. 😦

They are Lies from the Liar and have nothing to do with Truth. Their only purpose is enslave the unwary to its evil. Incinerate them.
 
Burn them! Don’t just throw them away. Someone might find them in the trash and keep them. Burn them so nobody can get a hold of such filthy garbage!

I’m certainly not a PC green environmentalist by any stretch of the imagination.

The simple solution…You place them in a paper grocery bag and take the out to the curb on “paper” day for recycling.
 
I think it’s all been said, so what I have to say is merely to repeat the others. Either toss out with the garbage, or burn them. If you have a fireplace, you have the best solution for starting a fire.

That’s what I was going to say. 🙂

Like a poster above mentioned, pornography is one of those things that is always an occassion to sin. If it was Dawkins “The God Delusion” or the collected works of Nietzsche, I would have no problem with trading them in. Perhaps some Christian would want to pick up those books at a used bookstore in order to be informed and refute them. But there is no good reason for anyone to pick up pornography.

Shred and recycle , recycle or burn . Whichever works for you. Don’t trade them in so that they can cause a brother or sister to fall.

Glad to hear you were able to do it! 🙂 And just think of it this way, those “firemen” were afraid of letting people think. Thinking is the last thing a pornographer has on his agenda for you!
 
I Burned my porno books, so no one else could get a hold of them, especially children
