I don’t know who to ask. My friend lost her father last week or so. he was bad, i don’t know all details but i understand something about drunker or abusive to her mother, she didn’t love him very much. My friend is also an atheist. Now she says she dreamed the father crying and asking her to pray for him because he has only 40 days to save his soul.

Can this really happen and the dream be true?

She told me it’s not fair, that if he did craps why should she fight for his soul?

i told her to pray.

Would it help if i pray for him?

I think you have this thread posted in two separate forums.

Just to let you know, it’s against the forum terms of service to post multiple threads on the same topic.

Well there is no time when you are dead, and once you die comes judgment. You are either already saved, and in purgatory or heaven, or you are damned and in hell.

So, no, having “40 days to save his soul” may be the plot of a movie but it isn’t how God works.

No.

We can always pray for people, if they are beyond help then our prayers are added to the treasury of merit and help others.

I think the question of whether or not to pray for her father can be answered without taking this dream into consideration. It’s never too late to pray for someone to be saved, dead or not, God is beyond time and can see all prayers always. If you are Catholic, you should definitely pray for his soul and when your friend is strong and ready she should pray for him too, but it is hard to pray for people that have personally wronged you. HOWEVER, such prayers would be profound and carry much weight and significance because your friend is both someone who knew the soul in question personally (as his daughter) and happened to in someway be victim to some of the wrongs he did not right in this life.

The dream may or may not be legitimate and it is probably at the discretion of your friend whether or not to believe it. But whether or not she had it doesn’t change that her father needs prayers desperately, like we all do. I shall pray for you all,

God bless

This may be a good opportunity to talk to her about your own faith, that we believe that there is a God that loves us and wants us to be in heaven with him. He wants us to pray and to talk to him, especially about our hurts and struggles. I hope this opens a door of faith for her. God bless you for caring for her and coming here to help her.

We believe that some souls end up in purgatory and we are always able to pray for what we call “the holy souls in purgatory.” Dedicating “our father” prayers was a practice a priest once informed me of.

There is no limit to god’s mercy and perhaps it is a good idea to pray for him regardless. Some churches also offer candle lightings for All Souls’ Day. His name can be written on those candles but it is in October/November.

Given what I see here, I don’t believe god would limit the family’s ability to light a candle for his holy soul the next year (at any church really), so the 40 days thing is probably out in my honest opinion.

For holy souls in purgatory also see the Saint Gertrude the Great prayer.
