What to pack to start postulancy?!

Hello all!

I have been accepted into the Franciscan Friars OFM and I am starting my postulancy in September.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me any tips regarding how or what to pack to take with me?

I am a bit lost!

I wouldn’t worry about this. When a friend of my entered the convent, she was given a list of things to bring. As the date for your entry gets closer, I’m sure that the Friars will send you a list, too. Since you will be preparing to take a vow of poverty, you probably won’t be asked to bring much. Many items which you owned personally before may now be held in common by all the brothers.

Hi. Not much to take, I expect, apart from basic necessities, spiritual reading material, your Rosary, and yourself.

OFM with no further letters? In my experience with them (albeit a different province), a good catechism. :coffeeread:

In all seriousness (or maybe, in additional seriousness), bring clothes, toiletries, and bedding (optionally: a laptop & cellphone) Everything else is generally provided for.👍

The OFMs are good guys, but there’s an interesting bit of theology rolling around in certain quarters of the Order. :compcoff:

I wouldn’t expect to take much to embrace monastic poverty 🙂

Some 30 years ago I entered a Benedictine monastery at the ripe old age of 19 (left after just over two years, wasn’t my vocation).

They sent me a list of what to bring. I remember the trouble my mom and I had finding long black socks of all things! 😃 The list was short and to the point, if you will. They even specified which version of the Bible to bring.

It took me far longer to dispose of my earthly possessions (“go and sell [donate] all that you have… and follow me”) than it did to pack what I was taking with me.

My friend in Seminary with the Convectual Franciscans in Chicago said they told him what to bring and what not to bother to bring. Much of it depended on what he could fit in the suitcase. His parents sent extra things later on.

I am very excited…it was a long process of discernment and application to make it…but it worked in the end.
