What version of the bible to you use/prefer?

I have a regular New American Bible (not study or student). I am looking for a new one because I have had it since 5th grade and the pages are falling out.

I’d like to get a study bible or a student bible. What bibles do you use and how have you liked it?
 
Get yourself a Morocco leather bound (not that bonded leather garbage) Douay-Rheims from Baronius Press. I would order it directly from them though, as some resellers may have the 1st edition which contained some typos but the 2nd edition published in 2005 corrected those. For a regular study Bible, the RSV-CE (not NRSV-CE) is good. I definitely would avoid the NAB. It’s fine for everyday use, but for apologetics use, the DRV or the RSV-CE are far higher quality. You’re also good with a Jerusalem Bible.

I’ve used alot of different versions, King James, New International Version, Holy Bible placed by the Gideons. The only Bible I use for studying and for daily use is the Douay-Rheims version. If you want a good study Bible, and you are Catholic, the NRSV is good. (It might be NSRV) but it is a Catholic Bbile, and it is recommended. Myself, I prefer the DRV which is also a Catholic Bible. It has old fashioned words in it and it is plain lovely!

The NRSV is a “new” version of the RSV. The NRSV itself is a protestant version; the NRSV-CE being a “Catholic” version. The NRSV-CE & the NRSV isn’t great at all, avoid it.
 
I didn’t know it was protestant version? Then I must have it wrong
because the priest At the RCIA must have not said NRSV?
He must have meant NRSV CE? I’ll have to ask him next Wednesday!

Ah, no problems. 🙂 Yeah, your instructor was probably thinking of the NRSV-CE.

UMM… maybe it was, because if you are Canadian, the Liturgical bible used IS the NRSV!

As for my bible of usage, the numbering in Tobit and Esther is quite annoying, but I follow mostly the Douay-Rheims because it gets me to read the Bible.

My Scripture Study leader urges me to use a more modern version… If only the NAB sounded beautiful…

I have trouble with the thees and thous. I am a Jerusalem Bible person. I also use the New Jerusalem Bible as companion. I just got the New Living Translation Catholic Reference Edition. It is an easy read and NOT the Living Bible paraphrase.
 
The New Catholic Answers Bible is very good with a lot of helps laid out in a simple format ( same version as your St Joseph Bible). The Rainbow Catholic Bible is the Good News Version. It is okay but has a few quirky renderings. I do use it as a help.
 
I use different versions for different things. I am the Scripture Study leader at my parish and for this I use the RSV. It is very good for scholarly discussions and appologetics. My problem with the NRSV-CE is that it focuses on inclusive language. :tsktsk: I believe this often times distorts the meaning of the text.

I am also the Director of Youth Ministry and Confirmation. For this I use the NAB. In working with youth I have learned that it pays to be consistent. I use the NAB because this is what my youth hear at Mass.

I think that the important thing to remember is that there is no one perfect translation. This is why it is good to have more than just one on hand. I have, and use, the NAB, RSV, NRSV, Douay Rheims, New Jerusalem. 🤓

I prefer the RSV:CE/Ignatius Holy Bible. I also have the Douay-Rheims Bible. Both are recommended. You can preview the text for the Douay-Rheims at:

There might not be any perfect translation, but there are some which have came awful close, like the Jerusalem Bible. The Jerusalem Bible was translated from the original Greek texts into French and from French into English. It is one of the few English Bibles approved by Rome to be declared imprimatur; that is correct in all matters of faith and doctrine.
 
I use the same one that Fr. Benedict Groeshel (sic) uses, the Ignatius RSV-CE. It looks like a textbook but it is a lot better than my St. Joseph NAB.

It is just more reverent. We need all the reverence for our dear Blessed Lord that we can muster.

Catholic RSV is the absolute best that is out there. (It’s the RSV published by Ignatius Press and also the RSV used in the Navarre Commentaries).

What about the New Catholic Answer Bible or the Catholic Rainbow Study Bible? I saw both of these at a local Christian bookstore and their layout was very appealing to the eyes. I am leaning more towards a more visually appealing / study / student bible. Anyone have experience with either one of these?

The Catholic Answers Bible and the New Catholic Answers Bibles are great… based on the NAB; but they come with dozens of tracts inside discussing why we believe what we believe and where to find it in Scripture.
