What was Paul's "thorn in the flesh"

As St. Paul was one of the greatest of all saints, it is unlikely that he would pray to be relieved of any physical suffering, or ailment. So I think, (and I fear making any comment on the subject), that it likely would have been a temptation to sin. Since he calls it a “thorn in the flesh”…well, use your imagination.

Paul could be specific when he wanted to. I believe he was intentionally vague here, his point not germane only to some particular thorn, but any thorn at all.
