I recently started using my Shorter Christian Prayer book. What week in the Four Week Psalter should I start with this coming Monday May 21, 2018. My book only goes to 2015.

Thank You

The number of the week following the Easter Season in 2018 is 7.
7 mod 4 equals 3.

It is Psalter week 3.

If you google for “table of moveable feasts” you may find tables with these data. The tables can be a bit confusing as there are usually columns for the “number of weeks” “before Lent” and “after Easter Season” which data is not really the “number of weeks”, but the “number of the week” (eg there are 28 weeks following the Easter Season this year; many more than the listed 7).

You can also find this information in, eg, the USCCB Liturgical Calendar 2018, which on Monday 21 May notes parenthetically (Seventh Week in Ordinary Time), and more importantly (but less noticeably) “Pss III”, which indicates Psalter Week III.

Apologies. The modulo operator. Essentially it is the integer remainder of integer division.

This is the 7th week of Ordinary Time.
7 mod 4 is (7 divided by 4 equals 1, remainder 3) 3. Use Psalter week 3.

In two weeks will be the 9th week of Ordinary Time.
9 mod 4 is (9 divided by 4 equals 2, remainder 1) 1. Use Psalter week 1.

Following that will be the 10th week of Ordinary Time.
10 mod 4 is (10 divided by 4 equals 2, remainder 2) 2. Use Psalter week 2.

Did you notice I skipped next week? It is a little trick.
Next week will be the 8th week of Ordinary Time.
8 mod 4 is (8 divided by 4 equals 2, remainder 0) 0.
When the answer is 0, use Psalter week 4.
