Does anyone know the circumstances around St. Paul’s Martyrdom?

Why exactly was he beheaded? What prompted it? What year?

I hope this falls under the topic of Church history and any info would be appreciated.

St. Paul was beheaded because he was a Roman citizen.

Roman citizens when accused of a crime against the state or another citizen and convicted by the court were killed by decapitation.

Non Roman citizens on the other hand could be killed by crucifixion like St. Peter, or fed to lions or impaled.

On his death date there is no precise and certain but all concur it was towards the end of Nero’s reign.
Here is a very informative website on the life of St.Paul:

newadvent.org/cathen/11567b.htm

.

PBS had a documentary on Peter and Paul and the Christian Revolution a few years ago. It may be still possible to view this video.

IIRC, I believe there were multiple attempts at the (capture and) life of St. Paul.
