Hello all.
What/who is actually God? Is El, Yahweh or something else?
Because I’ve been reading about the philosophers “Prima Causa” and the biblical El/Yahweh and seems to me they are two completely different guys.

Thank you.

The Old Testament has several names for God
The divine name that is never spoken as it is spelled, but is spoken as LORD or Adonai. Then there is EL, Elohim, HaShem and a few others. All the same God.
The Divine name is spelled YHWH. There were no vowels back in those days, although some consonants could function as vowels.

Documentary Hypothesis surmises:
  • Jahwist scriptures; 10th to 9th cen. B.C. (more anthropomorphic God, favors Judah - South)
  • Elohist scriptures: 9th cen. B.C. (more abstract God, favors Israel - North)

Regardless of how we try to describe God, we can never fully comprehend Him, as the Church teaches. But we can nevertheless know Him, to our satisfaction, but even then only as a matter of grace, as He reveals Himself to us. And this is only fully complete in the next life, via the Beatific Vision

God is infinite, immutable, self-sufficient, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent… just to name a few. Our human mind can never fully understand God.

I don’t really have much tolerance for philosophy. But here is Edward Feser quoting McCabe on the Divine nature.
