What would you do?

You have a 10 year child that you have diligently raised and taught the Faith to and one day, they come home and tell you that Our Lady has appeared to them and has a message. How do you handle it?

I am asking this question as I am re-reading Father de Marchi’s book Our Lady of Fatima and how Lucia, was horribly mistreated by her family especially her Mother.

go to your priest or bishop and have them hear the child’s story.

I’d make an appointment with your parish priest and have the three of you (you, your child, and the priest) discuss it.

I would remain neutral. Discuss it when he wants to talk about it, don’t push him or ask him a lot of questions. Don’t be negative toward him or ignore his accounts, just be gentle and understanding.

I’ve always thought that children are closer to God and the spiritual than we adults are. I don’t doubt for a second that this could happen to him, we hear of accounts like this all the time, some resulting in amazing miracles. It is the closed and jaded adult mind that pushes this openness to God away from us.

Ditto. I would never doubt the child’s honesty, especially if she had not been in the habit of making up stories in the past. (I would never openly doubt the child’s honesty, anyway, since even if she is making up a story, there is a reason for it, and only by believing the child and having an open conversation, does it become possible to get at the source of the story and find out what’s going on.)
