What would you do?

Our parish had our Christmas dinner and the previous pastor of the parish was invited, as he is every year. He is elderly now and a couple from the parish went to pick him up. He lives in a seniors residence adjacent to a church. When the couple arrived, to their surprise, 3 ladies were waiting for a ride with him. This couple has a small car that holds 4 people and they did not know about the extra people who decided to be included on the ride. What would you have done if you were the couple?

My first reaction was amazement that they didn’t seem to think an extra THREE people would be able to fit in the ride.

I suppose unless it were really far away, I would explain that I could not fit them all in in one trip, offer to take a couple of them and go back for the rest. What would you do? And what did the couple do?

With all the scandals flying around, I know the elder priest in my parish make sure that he attends events with an entourage of sorts. He often picks the chattiest, gossipy ones so that they are great eyes and ears…a personal body guard.

When you have a friend who’s been fasley accused, you get jumpy. Who knows his agenda, most priests have generous hearts and being elderly may not have realized that a car has 4 seats. Most grew up in a time when their parents owned station wagons and them and all 10 of thier sibilings jumped in.

Wow, that’s rather presumptuous of the dear old souls, isn’t it… But so many people do have LARGE cars or SUVs these days, you can see how they could assume.

If it had been me, I might have explained that I can’t fit 2 of the people in that trip, but I’d be happy to make another trip, or I might try to call a friend and see if he/she can come and get them.

Later, I’d talk to the staff at the residence (assuming there is one) and remind them to call and check before adding another 3 people to the ride. After all, it’s not a BUS!

If there is no staff at the senior residence, I’d speak to the ladies directly. In as kind a way as possible, I’d just say that unless they want to wait for the 2nd round of rides, it would be good to call the parish office and ask if someone else can come and bring them to the dinner.

I’m assuming that your friends didn’t have to drive very far to pick them up.
