What Youtube ads are you getting?

For literally months on end I have been getting endless ads for Grammarly on Youtube. I have no idea how they decided I might want or need Grammarly. It’s not like I’m watching a lot of videos on how to write better or how to learn English as a second language, etc.

Within the last couple weeks there’s been some kind of radical shift and I am now getting endless commercials with some blonde updated version of Grizzly Adams trying to sell me Dr. Squatch’s All-Natural Soap for Men. Since at this point I do not even have a man around the house, do not buy soap or bath products or similar items online, and my viewing habits have not changed from what they were, I’m truly baffled as to why I am getting these.

I also get ads sometimes for St. Jude’s Hospital looking for donations, which makes a little more sense since at least it is Catholic and is the type of thing that an older lady like me might want to donate to.

What ads are y’all getting? Do they make sense?

Things about finding single women, some other stuff I am sure I can’t mention here, and video games. (The last one at least makes sense).

Netflix, Netflix and Netflix. I never clicked on any of their ads and I am not complaining. I know this can get worse. My bro receives political ads when elections are approaching and these are all so annoying. I never got those. Now who’s happy about having never watched political videos on Utube?
Maybe it has to do with the type of videos and music you watch? Like they have a matrix - people who listen to this type of music/content, usually are interested in this and that.
I just click to skip after the first 5 seconds.

I pretty much just watch true crime, and a little history.
I’m not sure what true crime has to do with either Grammarly or men’s soap.
For a while I was also getting ads featuring some half-naked old guy peddling laundry soap.

I have been able to avoid focus on what the ads are - until NOW!!!😠

I’ve been getting annoying ads for conservative groups like Prager University and agenda-driven Epoch Times. I guess it’s because I watch some Church-related videos. I get gadget ads too, like some solar battery charger. I guess that’s because I occasionally watch how-to videos. I was getting a lot of political ads too, from Tom Steyer and Bernie Sanders. I guess that’s because I watch a lot of Robert Reich videos. Every so often, I get a Trump ad, which is the only time I use the “thumbs down” rating feature 😠. It’s all targeted in some way…

I actually don’t know. I’m kinda good at ignoring them on my phone and tablet or x-ing out if things that pop up without paying much attention. Maybe it’s the tunnel-vision of the skeptical? Now I’m kinda curious.🙂

I got that one a couple times. I bet it’s because I watched something on how to dissassemble a particular kind of bathtub drain because I have one in the house that I probably need to clear hair out of.

The ads don’t seem to have much rhyme or reason compared to Facebook ads. Like if I’m on Facebook and I post on a cat group, I start getting ads for cat t-shirts, cat Halloween costumes, other cat stuff. If I post on a Catholic group, I get ads for pilgrimages and for other religions like Mormons. If I talk about somebody dying I get a whole bunch of ads from Seraphic Mass Association offering Masses for the deceased, or an ad for the joke “Handbook for the Recently Deceased”.

The only ads that really make sense on Youtube are when I watch something Christian on there like a Christian pop song I start getting all these Pureflix ads.

I was going to say the same thing. I mean, I know I get ads. But I can’t for the life of me recall what they are for.

I pay more attention with my kids. My son has taken to watching YouTube videos of people playing with play-doh or slime while nursery rhymes play in the background. The other day, I noticed that one of those semi-translucent pop up ads that appear while the video is still playing was for birth control! Maybe they figure they are targeting the parents of the kids who are watching the same video for the 100th time.

I bet you’re right! If birth control wasn’t immoral, that would be funny.

I know. I had to stop myself from chuckling at the image of a frazzled parent hearing the same nursery rhyme for the millionth time in a row and then seeing the ad and thinking, “Do I really want another kid and to be subjected to this song for the rest of my life? Maybe I’ll just click and see what they’re offering…”

I wouldn’t mind political ads so much, but it’s not the videos I watch that are getting them, it’s the videos my baby niece watches that are getting them. She is not even a year old, so I am pretty sure she can’t vote in any jurisdiction.

i feel like i’m missing something, except for an occasional music video, i don’t watch you tube.

what do you use it for.

Documentaries on true crime and history mostly.
Occasionally a music video, old movie, or a fix-it video for some small home repair.
There are also some rosary prayer videos and St Bridgets Prayers videos I have watched for praying or meditation.
