Whatever happened to "Peace be with you"?

Didn’t Christians used to greet each other like this around after the time of Christ’s Ascension? Maybe that was just a rumor I heard one time, but that would be cool to walk up to someone you know is Catholic and greet them with “Peace be with you”!
You have to admit, it would be a good evangilization tool because people who weren’t Catholic would wonder “Why do you Catholics do that?” and you could talk about the Good News to them. Just a thought.
 
Hmmmmm…I never heard of that, but it seems like something that would be so beneficial in modern day. After all, how could you avoid having a good conversation with a person if that was how your greeted them? People should start ti again.

Of course it dosen’t have to be a literal kiss, but I guess if you define “kiss” as a sign of love toward someone else, then a handshake and the blessing “Peace be with you” count as a “kiss”.
 
Muslims greet each other with “Peace be with you,” in Arabic though.
 
This custom hs not died out…I’ve heard it in my travels. However, my favorite is the traditional Bavarian greeting, “Gruess Gott!” Rough translation, “God is great.” I bet the Pope still greets people this way.

We could do the same - if the mood strikes you can use ‘shalom’ (the Hebrew word for peace), which is similar to the Arabic ‘salaam’

btw, “goodbye” is from Middle English “God be with ye”

Is it true that the response to “Peace be with you.” is actually “and with your spirit”?
 
Even if it wasn’t a tradition in the past, greeting each other in such a way would be a great tradition to start! I seem to remember reading somewhere that Christians should greet each other with a kiss as well, and most of the writers of the books in the New Testament would begin and end their letters by wishing peace and good will to the followers of Christ… at least from what I remember!

Anyway, I’ve already taken to signing my e-mails and such with not just my name, but “Pax et bonum,” the traditional Franciscan welcome and goodbye. It is Latin for “Peace and all good [be with you].”

I have a theory that if people see the phrase in Latin, it somehow holds deeper meaning for them… perhaps they do not readily know what it means, and must look it up! Then the true meaning of the greeting can sink in… or maybe that’s just my convoluted thinking…

So yeah, I’m kind of rambling now, but I think I will take to greeting my friends with a message of peace from now on!

among Catholics of my generation the vale at the end of a conversation in person or by phone is often just “Peace”. a la Dave Garroway, original host of the Today show.

When I lived in Bavaria, the common greeting was “Grüss Gott!”
Roughtly translated that is “God is Great!”, but the meaning was
" God be with you".
La paz de Cristo será con ustedes. Feliz Navidad de México.
