What's done with excess ashes from Ash Wednesday

The ashes are from the burning of last year’s palms. Excess ashes can be placed into a garden the same as old holy water.

That’s what we do. The ashes are just ashes if not used in a blessing, just like what is left of a candle after it is burned to the bottom, or palm leaves that are not burned.
 
That’s what we do at my parish- There’s an old glass jar that used to be filled with Motts Applesauce, but now holds the leftover ashes from Ash Wednesday.
 
Our parish is large enough that last year’s palms don’t quite generate enough, so we do keep ashes from year to year in Tupperware.
