I would like to become a history teacher with a particular focus on Christian and Catholic history, sociology and theology, in hopes to teach one day at a Catholic High School.

I am beginning community college in spring 2019 and after 2 years will be able to transfer to a University. I would love recommendations on the higher education schools you think offer great programs/courses/professors that are solely focused on Catholicism. Whether it be from your own experience or that of a loved one I am eager to start a list of potential schools to obtain my bachelors (or maybe even masters degree) at.

Thank you! And God bless

Franciscan University in Steubenville OH is the only one I can think of that remains truest to the faith!

University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, IN is pretty good. I know a few people who work there 🙂

Franciscan is great. I have a friend their now. She is taking classes with John Bergsma. Of course Scott Hahn is there too.

St. Bonaventure U. in Olean, NY is a small Franciscan school with a pretty good reputation.

The country up there is really beautiful and quiet.

Mentioned by others, Franciscan University has highly known faculty, but it is in Steubenville- which just seems sketchy to me. Although the city is the hometown for Dean Martin.

The Catholic University of America in Wachingtonn D.C.

It had a reputation for really liberal theology un the 60s -80s, but now is firmly center of the road. It has a Vatican recognized Pontifical Faculty of Theology and directly is directly under the oversight of the United States Conference of Catholic University. It also has a pretty good history department and education program. I went to CUA for three years before entering seminary and it really shaped my view on how to enact my faith, even in an intellectual context. The sociology department at CUA also puts an emphasis on sociology within the context of Catholic social teaching, although it does cover other schools of sociological thouht.

It is also a lot easier to get into than some of the other Catholic universities who offer the same level of education.

God bless and good luck on your school search!

I’ll be praying for you,
Br. Ben, CRM

TAKE THIS ADVICE!!!

Finish your associate’s at your local school before moving on unless the private Catholic school you’re moving on to has EXACTLY the same accreditation which is extremely unlikely. Classes even vary between colleges accredited by the same board.

Most schools will treat an associate’s as sufficient for their university-wide gen-ed requirements. If you just transfer classes without a degree, you might only receive partial credit for a three hour course you need which is about as useful as not previously taking the class in the first place.

Though I love what they did in the past, I would recommend you to avoid the Jesuits.
