Hello, I am new here, So let me introduce to you. I am student from little but quiet good and friendly country in Europe called Lithuania. Past few years I became interested in helping others, as renewable sources are my interest, so I began to search for people, who are interested in turning their houses “green” and to help them obtain their needs.
So this is my way of charity - the free consultations.
Another thing that could be called as charity from me is - always sending the money during Christmas charity events for people. I don’t send much, as I can’t call myself very rich.
So, please share your way of charity and opinions about one or other issue connected to charity. Maybe you donated 1000USD to Red Cross, or to other cause, all opinions are glad to be heard 😉

That is cool that you help people who are interested to go green! 👍

I like that because some people only think of cash donations as counting for charity. Not so!

Sometimes I visit nursing homes because the elderly are like a forgotten generation. All they want is for someone to listen. There is always someone there who wants a visitor. I have had nurses tell me that some are dropped off and the family does not return until it is time to collect their things and arrange for their funeral. No visitors for years!

The stories I hear are amazing! I get something out of it too. They even use words we do not hear anymore. Like a WW2 vet who told me all about when he “courted” his wife. LOL

Another very elderly friend of mine died last year, she was in her 90’s and still lived at home with a helper! I sat with her sometimes. She told me all about the depression, farm living, their first phone, first tv, first car, etc…I would tell her a few stories too, she had a wicked sense of humor and the home health care nurse was boring so she said.

Helping out with the Special Olympics is fun too, at least for me it is. Some of the kids are so joyous. Looking at the world through their unjaded eyes is amazing. They appreciate the little things.

It does not have to be big, real charity comes from inside, and no one even has to know. 🙂

Wow, that’s a lot of activities, if it isn’t a secret how old are you ? And for how long are you already doing this ?

I am between 1 and 100. hehehehe

It is not really that time consuming if you compare it to other things. I just do Special Olympics once a year. I do not volunteer for the Summer games because I am too fair skinned and burn easily, I have to stay covered. I am always around handicapped children though. my little boy is handicapped.

I go whenever I can to the nursing homes. I was a pre-teen the first time I went with another family and it had a profound affect on me. An elderly man began to cry, and said “my granddaughter, my granddaughter. I told you she would come!”. I realized he was referring to me, I tried to tell him I was not related but he just smiled, patted my hand, and did not understand. The nurse told me he was going senile. So I said nothing and sat with him for a while.

I asked the nurse about his family, They had dropped him off seven years before and never once came to visit. And she told me that was too common. Upon hearing that I went whenever someone someone else was going. And they really seemed to brighten up around children.

A couple of years ago we took a group of children and it touched them too. The kids made the seniors handmade cards and each person held them like they were an expensive gift.

We began to file out the door and one elderly lady said…“We will be just fine as long as people like you don’t forget us.”

Yeah, if compared to how much time people spend watching television or doing other similar activities, helping others doesn’t take so much time :).

4 people have had a more decent look into my consultations and 2 of them have already built their houses using geothermal energy to heat the rooms and combined solar and wind power for electricity. I know it’s not much. But I hope that the word about it will spread to more people and the ones I helped will start helping others establish such technologies. 🙂

That is beautiful! I remember when my husband and I took our newborn daughters to the nursing home to visit his grandfather. When the people there, especially the women, saw the babies, I mean, you would think the biggest rock stars ever had entered the building!
They said things like ‘May I touch their little feet? Oh, aren’t they beautiful!’ How do you NOT fall in love with people who say things like that?

I think that’s wonderful!
My husband and I inherited $5000USD.
We gave it all to his brother. Just gave it to him, no questions, no strings. Just a gift.
His brother is a good person, he never says no to anybody. He works hard for his family. And they were struggling financially, so we decided to help.
And you know what he did with it? He spent part of it on their bills. Okay, nothing exciting there. But then, he spent part of it on a professional recording for his christian rock band. And he told us that this was the best thing EVER that has happened to him. He said THIS right here was his dream come true. And then, since he’s an auto mechanic, he built a hoist in his garage at home so that - get this - when people need their cars fixed for free, he doesn’t have to do it at his boss’ shop!
Do you know what I was going to do with the money? Put some in savings, and do some home remodeling. That’s it. Instead we gave it to his brother, who used it to make his dreams come true and help others.
I’m not ‘proud’ that we gave him the money. It was my husband’s idea, and, as I told his brother, ‘I am offering this to you once. Please take it, take it all, and take it now, because I will NOT be strong enough to offer this to you again.’ He understood.
What is it that the Lord says he wants? A joyful giver? That, I am not. But in the end, I’m really, really happy we did that.
My brother-in-law knows how much we love him, he was able to make his dreams come true, AND he’s helping other people. WAY better use of the money than my idea, that’s for sure. 🙂

Sometimes it is easier to make someone REALLY happy than you think.
Afcourse those 5000USD are really big money, but not the money bring happiness, deeds like this do.

In Matthew 6, Jesus admonishes us not to parade our charity before men so that they will praise us. We are to do good in secret, not letting our left hand know what our right hand is doing.

So while I am happy to mete out the praise you seek, I seek none for myself. 🙂 God knows.

Sorry if it seems to you that this thread is made to praise about something. I made it so that people who done something good would write their work not for this, but to encourage others to do good. Some people don’t know that it feels better when you help others instead of just caring for yourself, that’s what I wanted to show by real people examples. 😉
