What's the difference between the Pharisees and the Church?

I have started to study the bible and as I read the Gospels I am struck by the similarity between the rules and regulations which the Pharisees added to the Law of Moses and the rules and regulations which the Church adds to the Gospel of Jesus. How do we distinguish between the rules of the Pharisees which Jesus ignored and the rules of the Church?
