Candles are lit for prayer intentions. To ‘light a candle for someone’ means that you will say a prayer for them, and the candle symbolises your prayers.
Anyway it’s better to light a candle than curse the dark…

We light those candles as we pray to God or as we pray to a saint for intercession. The candles symbolize our on-going prayers even after we leave the church.

Here is what I teach my students. Fire is not something that we leave unattended. Any candle package these days tells you to always attend a candle, etc. etc.
When we light a candle, it is a sign that we are doing something important. It is a way of saying “pay attention”. In our current culture, we light them for Birthdays, special holidays, special get togethers, when we are calling special attention to something.
The candle symbolizes that attention is being given. A votive shows that we are paying attention to the intention.

One other purpose is to remind us to pray for the needs of others.
When we see votive candles lit in a Church, one of the things we are called to do is to pray for the intentions of those who lit the candels.
So, in lighting a candle. we offer not only our own prayers, but it is a visable sign to others that we are in need of prayer.
