Question. Where is the Confietor? I’m blessed to have a parish where we respect and follow the liturgy. But I’ve noticed over the last two years as a Catholic, that it seams over half of the parishes we visit skip it! I know there are times when you can, but these aren’t the times.

Is it simply this region, or everywhere?

It is Latin, it is spelled “Confiteor”, and it means “I confess”.

It is one of the four options for the penitential rite during the Novus Ordo holy mass:

OPTION 1 - The Confiteor
All present: I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters,to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

OPTION 2 (This one is rarely used)
Priest: Lord, we have sinned against you: Lord, have mercy.
Congregation: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: Lord, show us your mercy and love.
Congregation: And grant us your salvation.

OPTION 3 - Led by the priest or a deacon
P/D: (First invocation*): Lord, have mercy.
Congregation: Lord, have mercy.
P/D: (Second invocation*): Christ, have mercy.
Congregation: Christ, have mercy.
P/D: (Third invocation*): Lord, have mercy.
Congregation: Lord, have mercy.
(*The invocations are often things like; “You come to heal the contrite”, or “You plead for us at the right hand of the Father”)

OPTION 4 - The Kyrie
P/D/Cantor/Choir: Lord, have mercy.
Congregation: Lord, have mercy.
P/D/Cantor/Choir: Christ, have mercy.
Congregation: Christ, have mercy.
P/D/Cantor/Choir: Lord, have mercy.
Congregation: Lord, have mercy.

The Penitential rite concludes with:
Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
Congregation: Amen

After using option 1 or 2, the priest should go immediately to the Kyrie, but not after option 3, since the Kyrie is fully incorporated into that option. Option 4, using just the Kyrie, is quite rare, but acceptable.

I hope I answered your question!

Ah that’d explain it. Seams Option 4 is the flavor of the day in the more “sprit of V2” parishes around here.

Thank you.

The *Confiteor *is the first of three options for the Act of Penitence. I personally think it is the best and should be used at all times, but I am not the one who gets to make that decision. I suppose it is often excluded in favor of option C because the latter is simpler and quicker. There is technically nothing wrong with using the other options. However…

The Confiteor, followed by the Kyrie Eleison, is clearly the most complete and meaningful formula for this Rite. Unfortunately, the faithful in general have been subjected to diluted doctrine, music, and liturgy for years now. This is just one small example of this sad phenomenon in action.

Like many things, it may be a regional practice. But as far as I know, Bishops have not directed their priests to use any particular option of the three. Rather, it appears to me to be seasonal, if anything. For example, Lent seems to be a time when the Confiteor sees more use.

I just went to mass this morning, and we did both the “I confess…” prayer and the “Lord have mercy…” I like doing both - I need all the mercy and forgiveness I can get!🙂

Are you sure that the Kyrie is a separate option? I thought Option 4 was the Asperges.

I could be in error here. I thought the kyrie alone to be sufficient, but I will need to look further.

I am correct, however, on the first three options.

There is, however, a rite of sprinkling holy water that may be used in place of the penitential rite, but I do not know the conditions under which it may be used. I know it is used a lot during Easter season.
