I read the gospel from today’s mass this morning, Mt 9:9-13, and it’s the story of Jesus calling Matthew the tax collector to follow him. We just had that one last month…

July 1 readings:

June 5 readings:

Why the re-run? Does that happen often? I just got into the habit of daily readings about 2 months ago, and I was surprised to see this. I had heard that the daily readings cycle through most of the bible within 3 years. I didn’t think I’d be seeing re-runs already!!!

The daily reading and sunday readings are on two different cycles. The daily readings are on a two year cycle and the sunday reading are on a three year cycle. Because the Gospel on June 5th was a Sunday reading and the one for today(July 1) was a daily reading, the cycles happened to align in a way to have the same Gospel in a relatively short time. I would imagine this would happen every once in awhile when the cycles are aligned a certain way.

It is even a little more likely since the Gospel readings in the daily cycle are really on a one year cycle, the first reading being what usually changes for year I and II.

In Ordinary Time the daily Gospels use all three Synoptics, while one synoptic gospel is featured for the Sunday Gospels (Matthew=A, Mark=B, Luke=C). I have not made (or looked up) a detailed study of the overlaps, daily and Sunday.
