Who said anything about the government enforcing some morals but not others? I didn’t, if you’re talking to me. And I didn’t suggest that marriage is the responsibility of the state. I’m not sure how marriage get into the discussion.Sorry, I realize that I was not very clear. According to the Church, the following are immoral:
For the life of me, I cannot understand why so many people think the first should be the responsibility of government but not the second.
- two people of the same gender getting married
- not giving humanitarian aid to poor, needy people.
Either
A) you believe the government should enforce morality, in which case same sex marriage should be illegal and the government should provide aid for the needy, or
B) you believe the government should not enforce morality, in which case private religious organizations, not the government, decide who should marry who and take care of the needy, or
C) you’re a hypocrite. I honestly can’t think of any other reason besides hypocrisy why one would want the government to enforce some morals but not others
If we have separation of church and state, we also have separation of function. Taking care of the needy is not a prime function of the state. That is a function of church and of us as Christians. You see, the danger is that as the state takes over church functions, church becomes less relevant and more marginalized. We are asking Caesar to do what we should be doing. All of us, even Christians, will shirk our duties if we can get someone else to do them. People will look less and less to God, and more and more to Ceasar, who has always wanted to be worshipped.
P.S. Actually, the Church doesn’t consider two people of the same gender getting married to be immoral. The Church considers it to be impossible.
