A term called ‘rugged individualism’ is applied to extreme Capitalism, where the regard for oneself supercedes that of ‘the common good’. John Paul II speaks much on this subject. Google ‘Personalist Philosophy’ and John Paul II…this is an example of a good ‘individualism’…but it is never good, even condemned when it demoralizes another, or uses persons for a ‘gain’ without taking into account the other persons autonomy. I too had this same question.
Socialism on the other hand also reduces the individual to a ‘cog in the wheel’ of a the social ‘machine’ so to speak…and in its extreme is seen in the Godless communist society. Obviously, never good.
John Paul II has wonderful words of wisdom on these very topics.
