I was following along and nodding in agreement until, near the end, he said that continuing to burn fossil fuels is our best path forward.

It makes me wonder how much of this slick presentation is funded by the oil industry.

Nothing needs to be funded by the oil industry. There is nothing at all wrong with solar and wind. The undeniable fact is they are unreliable. This is a major deal when you start talking about the electrical needs of our everyday life. There are life and death needs for electricity. Coal and oil are reliable.

how much of it is true, should be the question. he is right in that green cost more than many are saying. is fossil fuel better, wouldn’t that depend on how clean we could get the burn? it just might be.

just look to the power outages in Cali when demand is high

a. That’s true and I get it, but fossil fuels have hidden costs as well.

b. California power outages have more to do with their poorly designed transmission/distribution systems than their energy sources.

Wind and solar are fine for certain areas as long as they are supplying just a portion of the electricity. But the areas for the best winds in the US are far away from major population centers, and it is very difficult to transmit the power from there to any major market.

Same goes for solar. Far from major areas. It can be a good resource in areas like the SW US, Vegas or Albuquerque for example. But there, keeping the panels clean becomes a problem due to sand and dust accumulating on the panels.

Major hydro power in the us has just about already been harnessed.

The only feasible, reliable baseload sources for the future are natural gas plants, and by keeping our existing nuclear plants running and beginning the construction of small modular nuclear reactors.
