When a Catholic makes the personal application to read the Scriptures

That is the ONLY thing we demand.We have no problem with someone who disagrees with us,but disrespect is another matter entirely.

This reminds me of the Rodney Dangerfield movie “Back to School.” Rodney’s teacher chided him about a paper he turned in on Kurt Vonnegut’s book, telling Rodney “I don’t know who wrote that paper for you, but they don’t know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut.” The person who wrote the paper for Rodney was Kurt Vonnegut.

So, here we also have one who calls themselves “teacher” interpreting a book given to the world by the author, and the “teacher” is telling the author that they are wrong… that the author doesn’t know what they meant when they wrote the chapters of the book and what it means as a whole.

The truth shall indeed set us free. I propose that first, we must find Truth, and not substitute our own ignorance and arrogance.

I’d like to add that Rodney does the non-Catholic thing in the movie, firing the author of the book so he can give his devotion to the wayward “teacher” motivated by romantic attraction… Of course this is about a secular book and secular author. How much more a mistake would it be that one who is seduced by their own way and personal “authority” to interpret, and in the process forsakes the immutable Truth. Christ’s teaching regarding the Apostles and their successors comes to mind… he who hears you, hears Me, and He who sent Me. Likewise, he who rejects you, rejects Me, and He who sent Me.
