When are priests assigned their new parish?

My understanding is that dioceses do their yearly shuffle of parishes and priests around July 1.

When do priests typically find out where they have been reassigned?

The parochial vicar at my parish found out a little while ago that he’s been assigned as a pastor at another parish starting in June. I think it varies from diocese to diocese.

Here in the Clifton Diocese in Britain parish priests often stay their whole ‘career’ in one place, our current Dean has been Dean of ‘Taunton Deane’ (about 14 parishes in the West Country) for almost 13 years now, and one of our recently deceased monsignors was parish priest of one little parish from 1956-1996!

July 1 is the usual time here. The summer months are best because there usually aren’t as many things underway in the parish (school is out, some parish activities may have stopped for the summer, and the major feast days after Easter are over by this time, etc.), and there is plenty of time for the new pastor to get acquainted with the parish before the busy time of year. I sometimes hear about priests moving in December or January, but not very often- those are usually recently-ordained priests being assigned as an associate pastor or administrator, or a priest retiring and a few more priests moving around to adjust.

Here in the Calgary Diocese, priest moves usually happen on August 1. They usually know well in advance of that, but they normally don’t tell anybody until about a month beforehand.

in general the new assignments are announced just after Easter, and the moves made in June since our fiscal year begins July 1. However the bishop can and does change assignments at any time during the year, with a week or in some urgent cases (illness, death etc) less, to make the change.

In my diocese, the Bishop starts making plans for the yearly shuffle early in the year. The letters of transfer go out the beginning of June and are effective July 1.
